Hello All
I have been absent from the forum for far too long! My wife and I bought a large bungalow at auction back in the spring and, predictably, it needed (and still needs) a good deal of work. Now that the property is habitable, my attention can begin to return to our P5B coupe.
The car is urgently in need of a suspension rebuild, in particular the radius arm bushes. A number of the steering joints are also showing signs of wear. Perhaps more seriously, I had always suspected that the subframe is twisted/distorted and now having a double garage with a nice level floor I have been able to take detailed measurements which confirm the distortion. I strongly suspect that the car has at some point been in an accident, there being signs of damage repairs to the front offside.
I am minded to try and obtain a good secondhand subframe/suspension/steering/front hubs etc and entirely rebuild the whole assembly, rebuilding the swivels, replacing all other suspension and steering joints, fitting new brake discs (ours are suffering from the usual heavy corrosion to the outer parts) and at the same time grit blasting and powder coating the subframe and other parts. It will then be a case of swapping over the complete assemblies.
And now to the point of this thread; although I have worked on both 3 litre and 3.5 litre cars in the past, in the former case it was over 40 years ago and I just cannot remember the differences between the subframes for two models. I have seen a good subframe which would suit my needs well - but how do I tell if it is for a 3.5litre car?
