Hello, I would like to find out about the work I need to do for my v8 coup’e to use unleaded petrol. Any information would be appreciated. Is there a past club magazine that discussed this for example ? Thanks . .john

You need to use super unleaded, as high as possible octane. I think that Shell is 99. You can use an additive, but it should be OK without. As the V8 has alloy heads it already has hardened valve seats . Retard the ignition to 3 degrees BTDC or 1 or 2 if it still pinks.

Thanks George so are you saying I don’t have to do any work to the heads ? That is good news if so. I have not had the car running for many years. Lovely quick reply thankyou

I have been a club member for a very long time George, I have had health issues but managed to keep hold of the car, which I bought from a chap named len Clarke I think he did things for the club. thankfully at last I have a very good mechanic helping me. a few weeks back we tried to start the car, it did briefly fire up but wouldn’t after that. The mechanic turning the engine over by hand found there to be a spot where it was harder to turn, so not wanting to damage it he has taken it apart, at first thinking he could ‘hone’ the bores. He has since decided although it didn’t look to bad that we should remove the pistons to inspect and get a set of new rings etc. . I thought at this time it would be good to do any head work needed for unleaded petrol. You say this is not needed as the valve seats are already hardened. Thankyou for this information George. I have not given up on the car so I’ll keep my fingers crossed all is ok. .john

Good evening. I would take a second opinion on taking the engine apart. The strategy of your mechanic may be supplemented with other ideas. Honing the cylinders means simply to make the cylinder walls smoother, and have nothing to do with making the engine start. There are several resources in the club that could support you in your project. Where are you located ?

I would recommend you to get in contact with Mr. John Wallett in Ely, which is about 79 miles from your home. He may not be able to do anything for you, however he might be able to point you in the right direction so that you get your car back on the road without unnecessary work. Mr. Phil Jones in the P5 Club is also a very resourceful person.
All the best to you and hope it works out well for you.

The valves and seats are unleaded. The only issue is the fuel. I use E10 no problems for many 1000s of miles. The ignition timing is 4 deg BTDC. Every engine is different and the max advance to avoid pinking under load is the correct setting which has always been the case
I would not start pulling the engine apart until you have tried running it as above
The engine was designed for 100 octane (5*) leaded petrol which has not been available for almost 40 years. No additives are necessary either unless its not run frequently then some Ethanol dryer additive may be useful to absorb the water that will collect in the tank and carbs whether S5 or E10 is used It seems to me a good service and regular use will sort it
