After 12 years of happy P5 motoring with another 12months on the MOT I was feeling quite happy about sourcing 2 new oilite bushes for the handbrake pivot @£1.80 and becoming politically correct by researching rear seat belts for the grandchildren. My execellent good humour was severely tested however by massive screaching noises from the engine bay and an engine that laboured to manage a decent tickover even with a heavy foot on the throttle. 20 minutes of dire thoughts about a booster course of steroids and a massive wallet transplant to renew the big ends gradually evovled to the realisation that the liberal sprinkling of metal shavings in the engine bay was due to the dynamo sieving up. Having agreed with the excellent gentleman from the RAC that the best plan was to snip the drive belt and drive home rather than being towed or trailered the challenge now is to try and sort it all out out. Any thoughts on the drive belt or dynamo front bearing spec etc so I can try and source all the bits locally would be much appreciated.
Kindest Regards to All

Quickest solution is to source a replacement from Dave Green (See Take Five) and examine the old one at leisure to see if it can be refurbished as a spare.

The same thing happened to me - try also Barry Kent if you want new parts he had then last time I checked.
Its still better to get a spare dynamo as the ones with the steering pump tongue are harder to find when you want one
