after fitting my new auto box i am wondering why the gearbox mounting on the "new" box had six shims between the mount and gearbox casing where as the original had none. the shims appear to purpose made items not home made

Rover were very particular about lining things up!!
I suggest you fit the same number as were on your car as this will match up with the subframe/body alignment.
Of course if you have fitted different mounts you have to align from scratch however that was done!

It's probably some time since this thread has been active, however, having just completed the task, it can be a pig. One issue is that dear Mr Wadhams engine mounts are deeper than the originals (mainly due to age compression) leaving a quite large shim gap on the gearbox mount faces. However, I turned the subframe mount upside down and, magically, the shim gap was nearly perfect! A word of warning, the drivers side rear engine mounting is a pig to change, access is severely compromised by the servo and it's mount; I'm just glad I already had the subframe dropped to weld up the usual crossmember/sill area. Interested to hear from others who've done the job.
