I have the opportunity to purchase a Rover V8 engine that has been completely restored (rebored, new pistons, heads and crankshaft reground with new bearings, pistons etc.). But this engine was originally fitted to a P6 (not sure what year) with a manual gearbox.
Will this fit without trouble in my P5B V8 1970 - engine mounts, manifold exhaust connections, witing connections and bell housing having an autobox etc?
Dennis.

It should fit after changing the sump, front cover, flywheel and spacer from your old engine. Exhaust and inlet manifold as the kickdown is needed.

If the engine is from a P6 the sump is the same, the front cover is also the same it's just the oil pump cover that's different, the P6 one (filter facing forward will fit OK) change the flywheel for the flexplate and spacer, as well as the spigot bearing. You won't need to change the inlet manifold. Use all the other ancillaries and mountings from your P5B. I've done plenty of these without problems. The sump and front cover are different on the SD1 not the P6B.

Harvey, You seem to know a fair bit about this subject. I have a P6 3500S which really is never going to be restored (by me at any rate) and a P5B which I want to convert to maual gearbox. My first thought was to go the LT77/R380 route but then I thought why not just use the 3500S engine/gearbox or just the gearbox. Will it work? Any advice greatly appreciated.
Johhny.

The 3500S gearbox will fit to the engine in your P5B, you will just need to sort the prop which will need to be a different length, the speedo cable, and mountings etc. and use the flywheel clutch and spigot from the 3500S. You'll also need a pedal box and pedal which you may be able to use the one from a 3litre manual.(as P5B's were all auto.) and sort out where to put the gearlever.
As for gearboxes, the 3500S box is weak and some parts are unobtainable (and have been for years), the LT77 is better, (I converted a 3500S in the mid 80's and that's still OK) and the R380 is the best of the bunch.
I would say it's definately do-able, it's just a slightly odd request as most people prefer the auto in the P5b. (The P6B is a different matter though.)

I would agree with what harvey says.
I too think that a manual box doesn't really suit the character of the car.
The only problem I can think of is clearance for a clutch master cylinder. Will it clear the wider V8 engine ? Never actually tried it.

Many thanks for the advice. The auto box is on it's last legs so I thought I'd go manual- I know it's a bit odd for a car of this type but I'm just not keen on autos. I have the 3 litre pedal box with pedals; assume I would use the 3500S slave cylinder, but will the three litre master cylinder work (notwithstanding Smallfry's remark on clearance)?
Another query concerning hydraulics; I'm keen to convert the car to dual circuit brakes. I gather that the P6B master cylinder is the same as the P5B; could I use a P6 tandem master cylinder (apparently available from JRW); with the 3 litre pedal box of course!
Regards,
Johnny.

3500S slave cyl will only work with that box, unless you make up a 1/4" spacer to go between it and the LT77 box. If the master cyl bore sizes are the same they will work OK together. To fit dual line brakes you will not only need the m/cyl, but a dual circuit servo, or failing that 2 single line ones, one for each circuit.

Thanks, if I actually get around to doing it I'll let you know how it turns out.

I seem to recall the 3 litre slave cylinder for teh clutch is the same as that for non-verto Mini's

I don't think the 3 litre clutch slave cyl is the same as the mini one, but the P6 2000/2200 one is.

If you say so - perhaps you are right, I have a Mini but not a manual litre.
Anyway why is this thread in the 3 litre section when its a V8?
I cannot see any real justification not to recon the existing setup. If you want a different engine/transmision buy a manual 3 litre

I'm perfectly happy with the engine; it's just the gearbox that I want to change.
