Well I have just spent all day fitting the windscreen in my fully repainted P5B saloon restoration project. What an absolute b#####d of a job it is. The worst thing I have ever done on a P5. Still with lots of patience and persistance it is now in and once the soft mastic goes off a bit I will apply the harder stuff to seal round the gaps and edges. It looks really good and the JRW seal was similar to the old one (that did not fit either ). I have also started to fit the rear screen but that is already proving easier. If you want mastic in your hair and bruises on your hands, this is the job for you.

Well, now you have made a successful job of it, you'll have a queue of members hoping you'll do theirs for them. ;D ;D

I think I would rather run a marathon in wellies. Still once both screens are completed I will be on the home strait with the restoration. All the door locks and strikers went back on yesterday. Next is door glass and so on. Now why did I decide to take this car apart in 2000? ?

Geoff, Sounds like a good article for "Take Five". With these cars, any information, short-cuts and warnings, plus the usual DOs and DON'Ts would I'm sure be appreciated by most. It may seem boring and perhaps superfluous once you have done the job but it remains an unknown quantity for many who may have no alternative but to give it a shot themselves.

I have taken a load of digital photographs (none of me foaming at the mouth!). I would be happy to pass on any info I have gained. I do remember that there was a previous article and I think I had better read that first so I dont just repeat everything. I was lucky that I had help from an expert who just got on with it and I am that way inclined anyway. If you undertook this job without help and support you just could not do it as it needs certainty. It is the least precise job I can think of on the car as nothing fits in a precise and mechanical way. The mastic takes up all the imprecisions and the rubbers do not even fit the way they were obviously originally designed to. The P5 is such a piece of mechanical quality, this is quite a shock to the system. still if you can do this, nothing else will defeat you. Now I need a lie down.

Hooray, the back screen is in. I am getting used to doing this now which is a bit of a worry. I would not say it fitted better but it was a less imprecise fit than the front one (that was not good english but you know what I mean!). With a new rubber and clean aperture it took 2 of us 4 hours with only the final setting sealant to go on round the edges today. Then I can get the door glasses back in and start to return the shell to its former but improved glory. I have used lightly tinted film on the rear and side glasses to give some modern stlye uv protection also improved appearance and security.

Hi Geoff, if you could send me as much info about your windscreen fit with photo's and anything written to help I would like to put it on the Duchess web site? It would also make a good article in Take5 maybe? I am glad you got the job done through sheer perseverance. glennreeve@aol.com

Hi Glenn. I will write it up when I get a moment. It is a difficult thing to convey. I am still flat out on the car with any spare minute, trying to get it back in one piece but will get to descriptions in due course.

Thank you Geoff, you sound like you need a good rub down with the Sporting Life and a rub down with a Thai Masseuse. (I can supply the Sporting Life) My newly accquired P5B is off to the restorers for some work, and one of the jobs is to change the screen rubbers. The owner said it would be nice to do a P5B as all they normally do is Jags. (he'll soon change his mind then!) I will make sure I am there when the screens are put back in to see how they do it, but I would still be interested in your experience if you get the time. Good luck ;D
