just a quick hello. I am about to return to Rover ownership. I have previously owned a couple of P5's, a 71 coupe and a 63 saloon, but have been Roverless for about 4 years now. I will be picking up my new toy, a modified P5B coupe at the end of the month, after 4 years banging around in various Ebay bangers I'm looking forward to owning a proper car again. Hope to see you at some shows next year, mine will be the car with the purists scowling it at it Ian

Nothing too outrageous...flames down the side, dixie airhorn, 20" Chrome Giovanni wheels with spinners and a stuffed sheeps head as a bonnet mascot......only joking Externally it has a different grill treatment and Merc alloys..I'm not convinced about these, and whilst I don't want to go standard, I haven't made my mind up what to use. Mechanically it has a 4.6 Overfinch, 4 speed ZX auto box, slightly lowered suspension, a non powered rack and pinion steering system, which transforms it's motorway manners completely. Oh, and an LPG conversion...which helps. Ian

Hi Ian, this new car of yours sound vaguely familiar or at least similar to one known on the old site, I don't think it had Merc alloys but it did have some large alloys fitted.. Anyway, welcome to the club, the more broad minded members we can get the better. Cheers Adrian

Not yet, I'm picking the car up in two weeks, so I will get the camera out then. I will be interested to see what people think of the wheels. When I was a member last time, modified cars was a touchy subject, I guess things haven't changed much One of my other passions is mini's, and people are much more relaxed about modifying minis. Luckily. I noticed the thread on SD1 wheels, interesting. I was considering a set of Torq Thrust 15's in grey, but will stick with the Merc wheels for a while until funds permit an upgrade. Ian

Ian, where I work we modify old Aston Martins all the time and no one objects to them! Changing engines from 3.7litres to 4.2 or 4.5 litres with triple Weber carbs and distributorless ignition etc. I would just be very glad to see more Rovers in the club, standard or modified, what does it matter. At the end of the day, its your car and you can do whatever you want with it. I can't wait to see your car. Regards Ady

Astons...Yumm I agree, whilst i woudn't do any radical bodywork changes, i have no problem with upgrading the running gear, this will be my sensible car, and will have to get me to Oxford once a fortnight from sunny worthing, and cope with shopping trips, etc, etc. I suspect most peoples are using radial tyres, so why not tweak the engine a bit?

Ian, Welcome back to owning a "proper" car. I think modified is not an issue nowadays unless someone virtually destroys a car in so doing. My blue Coupe has Holly carb, Offenhauser manifold, Vitesse heads and pistons plus cruise control, cat 1 alarm, central locking, sat nav, sub woofers etc. It is in fully restored condition and looks normal. My other green Coupe is 100% as it came out of the factory and in great condition but needs 5 star fuel and is not as practical for everyday use. Neither is right or wrong just different. I love driving both depending on distance and mood. By the way have you actually paid your membership fee yet? If not, do it this month quick before it goes up. Also if you let me have your details I can put your car on the promotional register for possible TV and film work where an original car is not needed. Regards Geoff

Wise words. Regarding membership, I'm getting it as a Christmas present, but I'll make sure they get the application in before the price rise...thanks for the heads up. Glad to see I won't get strung up at the first show I attend, well first for 5 years anyway Ian

I personally like to see modified cars although some purists frown at this yet they are in the minority as there a probably few truly unmodified ones and those that are are standing idle most of the time as a static museum piece. I hope you are not put off again by any negative reaction as it takes all sorts both people and cars to make a successful club I await the pictures with interest and you could even send them to the club mag for a wider reaction

I really do no think original or modified was ever an issue. The club has always recognised personal choice - hence the award for 'Modified Cars' at its its National Rallies for at least the last fifteen years
