Matching tyres while abroad

If you are travelling to France, you should be aware that the police are fining drivers for using mixed tyre patterns and manufacturers. Not just radials/cross ply.
I think it makes sense really. But you should keep your spare the same in case you have to use it. This does not refer to those special emergency tyres.

Surely as long as a tyre has a legal tread depth to it and the sidewall is good, ie not been standing for 10 years then whats the problem?
