Did anyone else see Life on Mars last night. I love it - apart from anything else it has some great 1970s cars.
Last night's establishing shot was only seconds long, but nosing in from left of screen and driving off screen-right was a beautiful dark green P5 coupe (not sure which Mark or if it was a P5B but it did have Rostyles).
Is it one of 'ours'.

A Rover P5 was also seen in the underground car park scene too - could have been the same car I suppose. I think it was a P5B from the sound it made.
PS I wish the bl**dy councils would stop putting so much salt and grit on the roads around here. They seem to fear the 'sue you' brigade. I don't think we have had a serious enough frost to justify it at all.

I understand the cars were sourced through the clubs 'members show and car hire register'. Not sure of the correct title but Geoff Arthur is your man - see Take Five for details.
They did ask for a Rover P5B to be used on the shot where the villain hits the side, rolls across the bonnet and carries on running. Understandably the owner was not too enthusiastic, so they used a Ford Capri.

Having survived the 1970's I cannot watch such "rose tinted" versions of what it was really like - on balance I prefer the 1960's but not much more.
As regards salt - this "bad" winter has had serious effects on my chrome and paintwork - I am surprised as many lasted - but then they were never used much

You can keep the seventies. Power cuts, three day week, Bay City Rollers, Tank tops, then again there was "The Sweeney" UNTIL THE POWER WENT OFF AGAIN

d**n it !!! I missed the first five minutes of the programme, just my luck. Glenn, nothing much has changed from the 70's, we still get power cuts, ( the other night night we had three in the space of 3 hours), and the pop groups of today make the Bay City Rollers look like perfect gentlemen. There is also 'The Bill' we have to put up with two nights a week, and the latest fashion of bare midriffs and upwards make the tank tops look like overcoats. Sorry Glenn, nothing much has changed.

Did you see that Capri ?
The programme is set in 1973 and the Capri was "L" reg. It looked a real munter that was prematurely aged. Not suprised the owner didnt mind it being used for stunts.
My Rover isnt very good, but I wouldnt want anyone rolling over the bonnet !

Yes the Capri seems to be a dominant feature of the series. I don't suppose it mattered that someone rolled over the bonnet of it as it was only a Fix Or Repair Daily. ;D ;D

Why look at modern retro TV - BBC4, ITV4 are showing the real stuff with the "old" Avengers, Champions, Persuaders, Jason King - the whole lot!! All sorts of real period cars in all sorts of conditions. The stories/acting are terrible though

That's fine if you can those channels, I can't. Not that it bothers me much, I rarely ever watch TV and then only for the news. Much happier doing sport activities, working on classics and out and about in them, working on the computer, and taking life in the slow lane at times basking in the sunshine (not much of that around at the moment).

Its Ok for"retired" people like you - I am too K********D to do much else these days when I get home from work.
All these extra channels approx 100! come with the cable package - often there is little else on or more usually nothing worth watching

Rats, I did not watch Life on Mars (I do struggle with it) and did not see the P5. I was not approached to provide the car for this programme so I do not know where it came from. There are so many good programmes on Freeview, I cannot keep up. Poirot, Sherlock Holmes, The Sweeney, Minder, The Professionals etc etc. All but one of those can be a motoring feast on a good day. There is very little to watch on the main channels unless you like soaps and fly on the wall stuff. I dont. Tonight I shall watch Jeeves & Wooster on ITV3 then House on Five (Hugh Lawrie starring in both) then This Week from the comfort of my bed. That is enough tv for anyone in one evening. Roll on Summer so I can get out and about on salt free roads. Since the November blizzard that blocked the A30, Cornwall has gone mad and put salt down all the time. It never used to at all which was great
