My selector button has to be depressed to get in & out of park, also to get into 1st. But it can be shifted through 2nd, drive, neutral, reverse & back to 2nd without depressing the button. Shouldn't I have to use it to get into N & R from D?

The Use of the gear lever is covered in the Owners manual.

Yes, I had a look yesterday & it does seem you should need the button to get to N & R from drive but I wanted some feedback on other peoples cars to see if this was a common situation with the selector. From memory (off road for 5 years) I seem to recall occasionally slipping into N by mistake while on the move so perhaps this has always been the case with our car. How about others?

Hi,
On my car (1972 coupe) you need to depress the button to go everywhere except D to 2 and back again.

Must be something awry in our selector mechanism. Is a P6B selector the same. I've got one spare though it's from our BW65 car & thats a cable change.

Two types of selectors gates (brush and SS slider plate) were actually fitted perhaps they were different - on mine you can go out of reverse and drive into neutral without pressing the button to assist rocking the car out of snow & mud. This is the normal arrangement.
I will check on other selectors although I suspect these although of later type will have the same arrangement from memory

Thats a point. Our P5 is SS & the P6 is brush so probably not interchangable & I like the SS anyway. Yours sounds the same as mine though the handbook & later handbook supplement I've got say the button needs to be used for D into N & N into R as well as P & 1. It's not caused any problems in the past though so no worries. Thanks!
