Hi All I am think of changing the inlet manifold and carbs to a later model(From a SD1 I have a spare set in the garage) to get rid of the aed unit all together. Has anybody done this any problems?ie use a electric pump?
Many thanks

If your SD1 manifold has SU carbs,(not Strombergs) and your P5B has the short kickdown cable (with the bracket that mounts on the back of the head and under the air filter mounting pin) with the right use of the right parts from both the manifolds you have, you should be able to fit it without difficulty. The original mechanical pump should also be OK. I've done this before and once done it looks just as though it came out of the factory like it. If you have the long kickdown cable I would change it for the shorter type and bracket as fitted to the later P5B and the P6B fitted with HIF6 carbs.

The carbs from the SD1 are SUs. (My p5b is 1971 Model) If my memory serves me the kickdown cable is under the air filter, so hopeful al will be ok. Will it still need a return pipe to the petrol tank?
Many thanks Karl

It will do no harm to have the spill return as this was a half hearted attempt to reduce vapor lock and/or flooding

By 1971 the car should have the short kickdown cable I think. The P5B return pipe should fit straight on to the SD1 carbs.

It will have the short kickdown as thsi appeared on 1969 cars onwards assuming its not been changed - this is now not uncommon

The car number has a B or C suffix C indicates the short cable and AED. The long cable pulls directly to the carb linkage while the short one pulls from the throttle linkage.
