Was the noise there before you fitted the new pump? It does sound like bearings. Does oil light go outi immediately when revved?

Keep running it, you'll soon find out what it is 'cos it'll sieze or throw a rod. If the oil light doesn't go out until those sorts of speeds put a master gauge on it to see what pressure it has got, then if it has none up to those RPM, strip it and find out why.

Unless you need to remove the crankshaft from the block, everything can be done in-situ. (If you remove the gearbox you can even get the crank out leaving the block there, but by the time things get to that stage it's pointless not to just lift the engine out. If you strip it far enough it becomes so light you can lift it out by hand, no crane needed)

Both main and big end shells can be replaced without removing the engine, but take care, the last person who I knew that tried it managed to wreck the engine.(Luckily I had one to sell him)

So do you think it will be better to take the engine out to do it

If you feel more confident taking the engine out then that's the best way for you. It's obviously a lot more work. I've done them in-situ on both 4 cyl and V8 P6's and P5B's, and wouldn't dream of taking the engine out unless the crank was damaged, and you should be able to tell if that's likely by the sounds the engine is making.

I had a situation where the oil pump was not even turning due to changing the oil pump to a later one. It did not connect with the skew gears on the distributer. It was only because I was watching the rocker shafts that I knew there was no oil pressure. There is an adapter piece that should connect them.
