Dear All
I need a new set of ignition leads and wanted to see where the preferences among members are. Do you just buy standard sets (e.g. Wadhams or Spratley) or do you use something special (if so which make/type)?
Thanks
Peter

Standard sets are OK but I have a set of 8mm high performance silicon type at the moment. I must confess the only difference noticed is the much higher price!

Silicon leads will last longer too! I don't think that 8mm diameter type will offer any advantage if the ignition system is still running on a standard type ignition coil. If a high output / high energy coil is used, then the thicker HT leads would be helpful.
Regards
Freddy.

Peter I have a set of 10 mm as i was told they are good for gas as it requires a better spark They are a race set Have stainless cores inside which give a better spark I bought a flamethrower coil and have a iginitor fitted that replaces the points

Magnecor are the best leads out there IMO and do offer a real improvement over standard, they are expensive but they are so efficient that a freind who uses them on his tuned TR8 found that you couldnt use an inductive timing light on them due to their bieng so little resistance through the lead..
I would be wary of using cheap pattern or silicone 'performance' leads from any source that isnt a trusted and known company, I have a friend who recently purchased a set of unbranded 'performance' silicone leads (£65) for his classic Ford and after fitting it became really tricky to start and idled badly, on lifting the bonnet with the engine running in the dark you could actually see the leads shorting out around the insulation boots, they were soon binned and a set of bosch ones bought which have restored good running ever since..
On another note if you are running your car on gas aswell as ensuring you have the best possible spark you should consider fitting an ignition advancer to optimise the efficiency of your engine.
