Stan, round (Nysa) and square (Zuk) vans were produced at the same time, both were imported to USSR, so i remember both.
Well, there was no great diversity on the streets of the USSR;)
Niva probably was only soviet car which sold more on foreign markets, than on domestic one...

I always prefered the look of the Nysa but I do know they were both hated as used mainly by the Military Police at that time! Looking at Gaz-66 and UAZ452's now - I told you I was strange! Wondering if I could build a nice camper from them!

What can I say is that GAZ-66 is most capable offroad truck I know. But what to do with this in England? You dont have so much snow and dirt?)
UAZ-452 is small nice van not capable with todays traffic)
Interesting, Nysa mainly was used for the organisations in USSR, also for the agricultural farm workers transportation. Zuk was simply delivery van. And even not worst of its class, I would say. At least better than some domestic makers.

Bigger is better but my other half would never allow me that one! I am surprised how cheap they are these days! I was looking at the Radio Vans plenty of space in the back for a nice Camper conversion already insulated and double glazed! My selling point of fitting a full size Shower ws not enough to persuade her! The UAZ 452 is a better prospect, slightly wider body than my VW T2 but a lot lot cheaper! I just fancy something different but still go camping (we can go extreme camping it being 4x4). We do not handle snow very well in the UK, the slightest shower and the country stops! I dont mind the slow speed and poor fuel ecconomy its only the same as my VW. We Classic car enthusiasts are a strange bunch!

I think, UAZ is little bit different beast than VW T2. Once I remember, 1986 autumn, my father, me and few other guys went for the berrys and mushrooms to the tank driving range, some 80 km far from home. It was completely untouched piece of nature, thousand square km. So, UAZ just followed tank T-72 column which moved through the muddy track, no other car would be driven there. It was like show. But it didnt stuck.
But I dont know, whether it will have any advantages in the todays traffic. GAZ-66 is capable to move and tow Toyota Landcruiser in the 90 sm deep thick snow, thats what I have photographic evidence for:)

Sounds like fun Dennis! In the UK when it snows the Motorways - nothing moves here either! So a Gaz or Uaz I could go cross country!! Hahahha There is a company in Helskinki that sell them would be a nice adventure attempting to drive a 20 year old UAZ that has been sat in a hanger somewhere? I hear the newer versions are not as well made and have thinner metal? Better engine though? Wonder if the Rover V8 would fit?

In the Uk all I see are Audis, BMWs, Hyundais! Boring all of them! I would rather have the Volga - same reliability as an Audi but more interesting! ;D
