I just bought a set of headrests on ebay. I asked the vendor whether they were the cranked ones or the straight ones (ie MKIII/early P5B or later P5B). He said they were cranked. Turns out only one has a crank, the other is straight. About a month a go I saw a couple for sale of which also only one was cranked. I'm now wondering whether that was meant to be so...but why?
is there anyone with a MkIII or early B who can shed light on this?

Mine are both cranked on my 67 V8, puts them closer to your head for when you have no control left over your neck on those long drives. ;D

Mk3's and early P5B's had the thick seat backs so needed the cranked versions of the headrests though they will interchange

These are Mk3 headrests I can only assume the adjuster bar has an extra L shaped bend at the top before the two fixing bolts as on the ones I have seen and my own it is very small, a picture would be good to compare and help others to know what type they are buying

If you want to but they are supposed to slide right down to the seat if you bend them that wont be an option and a difficult task to crank at the very top as this steel is quite thick "and of a good grade"

It seems this difference between cranked and not cranked is much less of a deal as I first thought. I lived under the impression that the crank was further down the strip, in order to line the slot at the top up with the mounting bracket. (which would prevent a straight strip to fit)
The crank is just under the head, and it puts it about 1 cm further forward to make up for the extra thickness of the seats I guess. Oh well, I'll just put them in and see if it makes any difference. Seem just to be a coincidence that some odd pairs are around then.
I thought of bending the steel strip but as you say John it is quite thick and probably needs an elephant to sit on it to make it bend ;-)
I'll try and post some pictures later.

now that we're at it, any tips on how to make a spiral in a cable? one of the headrests doesn't have the cable that runs from the bracket downwards so I have to make a new one. wind it around a screwdriver or the like and then heat it?

I think he is talking about a phoneless cord.

I think Colin is onto something. Tom, get in touch with a cordless phone manufacturer and you should be able to get phone cord very cheap.
And Peter, ... there's no need to get personal.
