I am considering fitting a hi torque starter.
My own standard one is getting a tad tired so keen to seen what options I have before it dies.
has anyone fitted one and what was the supplier/brand/part number.
Thanks Colin

been doing a bit of searching.
The starter with solenoid underneath like ours is gxe4442. Moss are currently selling these on a sale at a very good price.

Cheers John,
I have been discussing with fellow p6 owners and the part number seems to be the same as ours solenoid under type.
Might be close to the coolant pipes but I can get creative if need be. mine isnt dead so I wont be stranded.
Will order one next week, maybe give me time to think.

Don't get the Moss one, i did & it fitted a treat, however when it engaged the teeth on the motor would not engage correctly, upon inspection it appeared that the throw on the cog was short of the plate teeth....horrible sound & messed up the teeth somewhat.Moss took it back ok & i ended up refitting the original which as you all know is a pain in the A@@e.

Bit concerned about that one Kev,
was this recent? I picked them out due to their sale price.

I have one from a Range Rover fitted to my Mk3 4.4 P76 engined hybrid. Its very compact and spins the engine over like no-ones business.

Hi, No can't say it was recent,i just thought as i was fitting a brand new engine i would fit one of these as well. Moss were helpfull but couldn't understand why it wouldn't suit the P5b.

Not so sure about the straight Rover engine application but on mine there is a need to run an 1/8" spacer plate otherwise engagement of the gears is too deep and it may end in a situation such as Kevin is describing. (Tooth engagement of the Rover pinion gear and the P76 drive plate is perfect apart from the spacer I just mentioned) There may be variations in the manufacture of the 'flex plates' that cause this situation. I needed this starter as the compression of my engine is around 11:1 and even the P76 starter would struggle and eventually the bush at the nose of the unit splits. The Rover gear reduction starter is a tiny unit in comparison...looks like something out of a small Japanese car.

Vince,
The one you have from a Range Rover would have been an aftermarket unit too. Before they became available we used to use a locally made Bosch starter for a Holden V8. Ritters sold them after replacing the alloy nose casting with one designed to adapt it to the Rover engine and rotate the solenoid to the required position. These were more durable and turned over the Range Rover engine a bit faster. But a high torque unit is now a better option. The motor is probably a Nippon Denso or something similar.

Just fitted the new unit. Getting the original out was easy enough, the hardest part is dropping it down but I just turned it 180* and with some gentle twisting and turning it was out. New H/T motor went straight in even the getting to the bolts are easy to get to now. The engine spins over really well and quieter. Looking at my old one it is tired and some of the teeth are chipped. I will see how it goes but I am very happy with the unit and the price that Moss have it at was a bargain. £148. in the carriage. This time last year I got a starter for my SD1 overhauled for £100 (though it was really badly burnt out). Colin

That looks very nice and a lot easier to handle!
Is it the GXE4442X that kev said didn't engage with the starter ring?

it is the gxe4442x from Moss.
I spoke to the moss tech guys who couldn't confirm this problem. If I get problems it will be going back, I did read something about a spacer plate for some H/T motors.
I was happy to take a chance on it after reading all the replies and also the moss guys.

Yep, that looks like the unit in my Rover. The best things about it are the small physical size and the the reduction gearing. It's a great little unit
