This ones for Roy, Jeep Grand cherokee wheels have the same stud pattern as the rover so not too much drama involved. First impressions of the wheels are that they are HUGE. They are 17" with 235/65/17 tyres on. I started at the front, they fit with only one minor mod - the wheel centre will not fit with the bearing dust cap on. The cap needs shortening by about 5mm. Easily adjusted with a hammer! At this point its best to stand back, admire your work and put the kettle on beacause it gets a bit more involved at the back end. The hub centre of the rear axle is 2mm bigger in diameter than the wheel centre, so this needs removing from the wheel centre. The wheel has a step in the centre the right diameter so its easy to remove the excess to the step and keep the hole round and even. If you try to fit the wheel now you will find that the rear face of the tyre just kisses the bolt holding the bracket on the spring. You're going to need a spacer. I used a 3mm spacer available from ebay. You will now discover that the wheel studs are too short and the nuts only go on two threads. You need longer wheel studs. Like these. These are 7/16 UNF thread 55mm long. I got these from merlin motorsport. £2.20 +vat each. Remove the brake drum, Thread an old nut onto the stud until it bottoms out and tickle it out with a hammer. To fit the new ones, push in from behind as square as you can, and then pull through using an open nut and a collar. I cant find the picture of this, but this is the end result. This is the difference in length with the wheel on. If you try to fit the brake drum back on you will find the it no longer fits! The shank on the new bolts is longer so the drum will need the stud holes opening out by 2mm ish. I ran a countersink around the holes to remove any stress raisers. You can just see the bracket on the spring behind the drum that the tyre fouled on to begin with. Fit the spacer, and fit the wheel with your new 7/16 UNF ford fitment domed nut. These have a 60 degree taper to match the wheel hole profile. JOB DONE! Head for the beer fridge. The old wheels can be refitted but open nuts will be needed.

Like colin says, wheels have to be from a Jeep GRAND Cherokee 99 - 04. I think it was known as the WJ. There is a quite comprehensive list of alternative wheels on here, i think it is under the wheel fitment thread? They are nearly all 15", so its pretty much jeep or custom made if you want bigger than 15"

I do like the grand cherokee wheels but being pretty late and 4x4 they are never cheap even of ebay. So chaps your sure they will fit with new studs and rear spacers. No wing or wheel arch rubbing over speed humps or heavy cornering.Being that much bigger i could get away with a standard Range Rover dif which are easy and cheap to find and still improve my top end .Being $.5 litre its not short on low end grunt. Cheers ps reassure me you have driven these things at speed and it doesent wreck the handling of a rover , mine does have massive anti roll bars. fingers crossed

Nick, If you are patient these wheels do come cheap. I paid £100 for four with good tyres on. The nuts you buy have to be the same thread as the studs, in this case 7/16 UNF. Jeep studs are 1/2 UNF ( i think ) The shape of the nuts where they seat on the wheel must match the wheel. In this case a 60 degree taper, which is a ford fitment. The spacer came from classeparts on ebay. The spacer is listed under P5 and Jensen catagories. You have to contact them and specify the inner diameter of the spacer. If you tell him what car and that its the rear axle he will know what size. As for driving with them at speed - i wish. See the new engine thread - my car is still in pieces. I have had a major bounce on the car with them on though. Hoping to have it up and running for the rover rally at east kirkby on july 1st.

My imagecave account is kaput with the pictures of the wheels on my P5 but this is one of the wheels I have for mine. The original tyres are very tall so I bought some lower profile tyres which are yet to be fitted. I experienced the same problems with centre and studs and needed Neils info on the studs and nuts used. Thanks Neil!! Attachments:

Ok im guessing the original rover size is 7/16 unf or you would have swapped the studs on all 4 of the rovers hubs and used jeep closed nuts. My coupe could have been lowered when modified but probably stiffened as well so ile take a chance, it may be lower but the new jeep wheels should clear the arches if it wallows less on the bends. Was told my wheels were from a jensen when they re manufactured the car later on .

My only concern is the side wall rubbing the inner wheel arch under any axle tramp. Im going to fit either a panhard rod or might have a go at a watts linkage when the jensen axle goes in. Everywhere else looks to be fine. Lets see some pictures Nick...

Just been offered 2 jensen back axels with 2.88-1 ratio .like the idea of the power lock diff ,is it a big job to swap the axels and would the jeep wheels still fit.I know the jensen axel is a sailsbury 4HA looks like i will have a spare jensen axel to sell as well so will be putting that for sale on here .Could be good to see how someone else tackles the job.

Nick, Have a look at www.v8engines.com its the rpi website, go into online projects, and then P5B upgrades, they carry out the axle swap for customers. They are very helpfull and will tell you everything you need to know over the phone. Have the axles you are getting got calipers and discs? They are frighteningly expensive. Have a look at www.martinrobey.com for the jensen parts.

Just picked up the axels both have discs and calipers and one has the springs and shockeres as well both are the 2.88-1 limited slip diff discs look a bit rusty so will have mine skimmed first. Was offered a jensen gearbox wonder how that would mate up to a rover engine. Nick

May well buy a set of wheels from the guy to .215 70 15,s on clean jenson alloys if i do the diff and the cherokee wheels it could well be to high geared,so may try the jenson wheels first with a range rover diff thats being fitted tomorrow.then decide on the cherokee wheel mod afterwards ,im sure the jensen wheels will be easy to sell . suck it and see

FINALLY got round to ordering the studs and new Ford nuts.. I could do with a set of 3 litre wheel nuts to enable the original wheels to be fitted to the new studs. If anyone has some knocking around?
