Hi folks,I'm needing lots of technical info and help from those who are experienced in this conversion. I have been offered a ZF4hp22 gearbox from a Jaguar along with a rover v8 bell housing to convert my v8 coupe to 4 speed. Never having seen this done, is there a list of parts thats required in addition to complete this conversion. Thanks

I am restoring a P5B Coupe and replacing the BW35 for a 4ZF HP22. As far as i can overloop the mods, following things need to be done: -shorten the propshaft by 87mm -change the mountings on the subframe -find a suitable filling pipe (from a Sherpa van or Range Rover) -modify the exsisting lever or fit the one from a Jaguar or Range Rover -pipes or hoses for the oil cooler in the radiator have to be made -get a speedo cable made
I got the propshaft shortened and balanced and changed the mountings on the subframe. I have a filling pipe from a sherpa van but i will source one from a Range Rover because the Sherpa pipes begin near the waterpump and i believe the ones from the Range rover start near the bulkhead
Regards
Peter

Thank you Peter, I think the range Rover filling pipe comes very close to the p5 original position so is prefered. Do you know what happens in the flywheel area, are things a straight swap with the torque converter etc? Thanks

How about some photos of the rear mounting set up for the new box??. I am no expert on autos, but if your box came from a B.M.W then the input shaft may well be different. As for tourque converter you may have to change to a rover??? maybee the B.M.W has more power ?? i dont know. There is a set of spacers to go with the conversion as well as a modified flex plate to suit. If you have trouble finding these i have some i could take dimensions for you to have made. There is also the issue of selector, is the B.M.W electronic??.If so you would need the E.C.U, and some also have a digital speedo, so no cable drive attatchment for your speedo. The only one i am not sure about is the convertor, you may have to seek more help on that. Over to you Harvey. ( some photos would be nice too )

Nice job of the mounting did you do this in situ,or did you remove the subframe?. Also did you use the bw 35 rubber mount?

Thanks. I used the rubber mount of the BW35 and the bracket (which i had to modify) I changed the mountings in situ but the modified mounting on the subframe is only tackwelded. I will remove the subframe (and weld it) to get it shotblasted and painted but i needed to do the modification of the mounting with engine, ZF4 and propshaft mounted in order to keep an identical propshaftposition/angle. With the engine and BW35 in the car, i made a wooden jig between crossmember (not the subframe) and propshaft so that i had the correct position of the propshaft.

Upon stripdown of the valve manifold block,i found that the restrictor valves did not match with what the overhaul manual stated, mainly the large restrictor and the small restrictor, were in each others places going on the books version, and there is another restrictor that the book does not mention. SR =small restrictor LR= large restrictor MR=medium restrictor This is where the D.I.Y home mechanic comes unstuck!!. I have decided to place the restrictors as per the manual, and put the other one that is not mentioned back in its original spot. Does anyone know otherwise? . All comments welcome !!!! UPDATE ON THIS,THE BOOK WAS WRONG,THE RESTRICTOR WASHERS ARE AS SHOWN IN THE PHOTOS,AND AS FOUND UPON STRIPDOWN. THERE ARE A FEW MISTAKES I HAVE FOUND WITH THE REPAIR MANUAL SO FAR also tagged on to this thread is a slideshow (click on image) of the valve block strip down, clean and inspection. I was suprised how much crud (mainly aluminium bits jammed in places) i found
