I have a lot of my interior stripped out as I am replacing the wiring loom in the roof area. I couldn't resist taking off the rear shelf and front kick panels etc. with it stripped I can see a lot of hollow body sections which seem ripe for sound proofing in sme way. Has anyone in the forum worked on this type of project.
Also I am intrigued to know if Rover sound proofed the bulkhead / firewall behind the crash rail area. I know there is sound deadening lower down but it is not possible to see further up without a lot of trim removal.

Not sure where the "crash rail is" but there is sound dedening glued to the upper bulkhead and front scuttle inside the car as you may be able to spot here On my car it was very loose and hanging down where the glue had failed, I removerd mine when the wiring was repaired to prep the bodywork it never got replaced , seems to make little difference to the sound level but I guess it must do something?

Been working on this subject all day.
I found some areas that I thought were worth improving as follows:
1. Behind the front passenger toe board, there is an area with bare metal. It is where Rover had the car prepared for left hand drive. I fitted some half inch jute sounded deadening.
2. I removed the heater duct work under the parcel shelf and there is a curved section of bulk head with no sound deadening. More jute was cut and glued on there.
3. Removed transmission tunnel and fitted new rubber seal around perimeter of underside.
4. Added Dynamat to front and rear wheel arches (the portions that show on the inside of the car
5. Added jute mat to rear Parcel shelf and the areas underneath and behind the rear seat
6. Covered entire floor in new half inch thick jute mat
7. Sealed numerous loose grommets with self amalgamating tape wrapped around the pipe or cable passing through the grommet
8. Repaired damaged jute on inside of roof after mouse damage
9. Still to do are to add Dynamat to the area behind the kick panels and possibly the doors. Also I have new door and boot seals from Scott's old Rubber to fit

The old Wrightcel company (Sellotape etc. and inventer of the wine cask bag in a box) used to make a range of sound deadening materials under the name of Unisil. I've still got a catalogue somewhere.
They made a range of foam sheeting that was used as sound deadening in cars, trucks, buses and agricultural machinery. Someone must still make a similar product. Anyway, the key to the heavy duty versions was a layer of aluminium or lead sheet sandwiched between layers of plastic foam. It was also self adhesive. The principle was that the sound was absorbed by the malleable metal layer in the sandwich.
I can't find any detailed info about Dynamat.

I love the wiring maze...it looks like someone had an epileptic fit in there.

I love the wiring maze...it looks like someone had an epileptic fit in there. It was very messy for sure and it caught fire soon after the pictures were taken and has since been replaced. The sound deadening removed as well with no ill efects. Dodgy old wiring can be so unpredictable.

I soundproofed my 3 litre with felt 25 years ago with little noticeable effect. Something that did significantly reduce noise, however, was new door seals. Wind roar is still high compared with modern vehicles due to design, eg gutters. Also radial tyres increase noise from roar and bumps compared to crossplies.

Stan
Who's door seals did you use. I have recently purchases a set from Scotts Old Rubber in Australia but have not yet fitted them.

I got mine from JRW. Don't know where he sources them from but I seem to remember someone saying in a post that they might be from Scotts.
