this is the end result. It really feels new again with minimal clearance. It really is worth to replace the small gears and fiber rings as this reduces the backlash enormus (Land Rover Series 1 or 2, costed only GBP 60,- as a set). Never did it before and i was a little scared but with patience, it can be done by a home mechanic. Bought also a set of shims but actually didn't need these. Another job done...

Well done Peter £60 now is better than a new diff if you leave it too long was it whining or just a slight backlash?

Hello John,
The diff is from my spares car. The shaft on the car which i drove had lots of backlash and wined. The backlash on the diff from the parts car was not to bad but the back lash on the small gears was too much. I first wanted to replace only the fiber washer as the small gears didn't look too bad but the difference between only ordering the washers compared to the full set was not that big. Most of the clearance, i believe, comes from the the wear in the fiber washers and the small gears. I asked Ashcroft for these fiber washers and they couldn't supply these although they overhaul these Rover Diff's. Now it really feels like new: you can feel the pretension on the bearings and the minimal backlash between the gears. I was really surprised about the difference between before and after the overhaul.
Glen, thanks
Regards
Peter

Well done Peter. I am in the process of changing my subframe and whilst I am happy to tackle that I am not sure about overhauling the diff myself in case I get it wrong. I don't know why but setting the backlash worries me.

Eastmidrep,
Setting the backlash also worried me but its not the most difficult part.I am sure you can do Removing the bearings i found the most difficult part. What helped with setting the backlash was making centerpunches on both rings (and marking these left and right) as you can see in attached picture and then counting the number of revolutions untill its loose. When i fitted these again with the correct amount of revolutions and checked the backlash, it was oke. I bought the small gears , shaft and copper gasket at Dingocroft and the bearings at Ashcroft. But Dingocroft also has the bearings. Both have very reasonable prices and from Ashcroft i got Timken bearings. both supply quick.

To remove the bearing, i bought a special set of bearingpullers. It is reasonable chines quality at approx Euro 100,-. I had to heat the bearing with an acetylene torch to remove it. You could also remove the rollers and grinfd the inner rings untill it snaps but there is a risk to damage the shaft.

One of the next jobs for me is also the subframe. I got it powdercoated.I don't have a towbar on my daily drive so made some special brackets and put it on the roof which caused a lot of curious looks. As my garage is rather full, i made a trolly and can assemble the subframe and rear axle in the trolly without the risk it gets damaged by falling. Regards Peter Attachments:

a picture of the trolly for the subframe and rear axle. The body isn't ready yet so with the trolly its safe stocking untill it will be fitted
