Hello Humphrey, I did mine last summer, all I did was use masking tape and a sharp knife and lots of newspaper! The spray paint I used was called SPEREX in satin black, you can get it from most car spares shops. They came up a treat.

Oh dear I remember the last time I did this. When Prince Charles married Lady Di there was a bank holiday and what better way to spend it than repainting my Rostyles. In those days I had a steady hand and did them with a brush, which is actually easier due to the curves. I think I would use matt rather than satin but that is a personal choice and I think I used a red oxide undercoat. The only problem is the paint adhearing to the chrome of the wheel and do not put it on too thick. I always store the spare with the chrome front facing down, to avoid moisture laying on it.

A black satin finish would be the correct thing to use. They were never black enamel. Andy has gone down the same route as I did about two years or more ago, and they they are still a lovely black colour. Only needing a wipe over now and again. I can remember going into this in detail on the old board site. I have found that the 'Sperex' range of paints are very good. They give a very good spray pattern and are quite powerful. The colours I use are Black Satin, Black Gloss, and Silver.
