Hi Gents, I have just discovered a fuel leak - it is dripping from the bottom of the auto transmission housing.
Given that the car has not been driven for several weeks, I assume that my reserve fuel tap has given up the ghost. I was showing the car to a friend a week or so ago and he may have inadvertently operated the reserve tap in lieu of the choke - thus causing the tap to leak. But maybe it was going to start leaking anyway!
I've unsuccessfully tried searching for a tutorial as to how to fix the tap - but to no avail.
Would someone be good enough to advise me how to fix a reserve tap leak - or alternatively, point me to a thread that will help me out? Thanking you in anticipation.
Kind regards, Paul 1971 P5BC Canberra ACT

Fhank you for your responses Steve & Phil. The P5B tap appears to work on the same simple principal as the 4cyl one on that site Steve, but looks to be a bit different physically.
One thing I was pleased to learn from reading a workshop manual was to loosen the fuel lines in the boot in order to stop the siphoning effect totally draining my tank.
Finding the applicaable thread on this site is beyond me - I assume one needs to be computer literate (or a mind reader)

It is the same tap as fitted to 4cyl and 8cyl p6. I have changed quite a few taps and seals on P5 and P6. You shouldn't use any old seal as it could react to petrol and dissolve. I bought a couple from Mark the last time I needed one. The valve can be remove by taking out the little grub screw. very simple and obvious when you have it apart. It is not clear in the post but there is a link to the part just below my signature in the original pots. Colin

Hi Colin, Thanks for your follow-up - and yes, I did miss the link in your earlier response. I'm thinking that I could probably source the O ring here in the Antipodes insted of waiting for one from the UK. Would you happen to know the size of the O ring? I can't see that detail on the ebay site you refer to.

I never measured one.
You could try scotts old auto rubber.
They weight nothing so postage wont be much, you could buy a few for local owners to spread the cost.

Paul,
Colin's suggestion is probably the easiest. Just email Scott and ask him to post you a few. But unless you're concerned about originality, I'd bypass the valve if I were you and just constantly draw fuel from the reserve pipe on the tank. It isn't really needed these days. These things were designed when petrol wasn't available 7 days a week, let alone 24 hours per day. You had to be very careful that you didn't run out on a trip.

Hi Warwick, Sorry for not responding sooner - we had to go to Ballarat on the 20th for a friend's funeral and have not had time to check this forum since we returned home. I will follow your and Colin's advice and give Scott a call early in the New Year. Your comment re bypassing the tap is noted and would be a good long term fix, but at this time the path of least resistance for me will be just to replace the O ring.
Best wishes to you and your family for a Happy Christmas and a Safe and Prosperous 2014.
Regards, Paul
