I'm thinking of changing my standard air filter for a pair of high performance filters (K&N?) would like to hear people's view on this. A waste of time and money or something worth doing?
Also any other filter options and suppliers much appreciated
thanks
Phil

Hi Phil,
What's the driver for changing from standard?
My view is that whilst that's a good make of filter and will probably flow more air, the net gain is marginal behind a slush box assuming you have a standard p5b.
For more power there are lots of other areas to start with - cam change probably being top of the list.
Just my view but I bet you'll get loads of others!
All the best
Barry

More noise too and jetting (needles) may need changing

Not really looking for major performance boost just thought it might help a little and the added induction roar would sound good. Don't want to do it if it leads to other changes needing to be made.

I believe K&N can supply filters that fit into your existing air box. I would suggest you go on their site or contact them.

I would't waste your money if you think you are going to gain "significant/any?" BHP Induction roar stick "Eye of The Tiger" on your MP3 player As Barry says you will get the simplest gain by fitting a cam shaft with more mid range torque, also you will have to set the carbs up to get the best results

I felt i went faster until i had problems with fuel evaporation . THe car chugged and cut out on a long distance and wouldnt or was difficult to start. Jason moore saved the day and put things back as they were intended . You can buy K&N FILTERS for the exsisting air filter box but imho the cheaper normal ones are better .

I was tempted to buy some K&N filters to fit inside my air box because it was getting difficult locally to buy air filters, although I had read reports concerning fuel mixture would need adjustment if this type of filter were fitted, in the end I stuck with the original setup. It was not a case of gaining more BHP but sourcing a modern replacement, but I would tend to agree there are problems if you down down the K&N route.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think I will leave things as they are for the time being. May look at more serious engine upgrades once I've gotten used to the car
cheers

Years ago I picked up a pair of K&Ns cheap in an old independant motor factors (now long gone)for the V8.
I put them on a couple of years ago and the effect was that I get a sucking noise from the engine bay when on-throttle but a huge flat spot in acceleration! Obviously it has leaned out the mixture and needs rejetting.
I think K&Ns nonly ever claimed a handful of bhp increase anyway so it was never going to turn it into a race car! But providing it was set up with suitable fuelling it could be used in conjunction with other improvements to make the car drive subtly better.
Each to their own.

I got a couple of filters that replaced the air box and stuck out of the inlets on the carbs, but yes you do get that sucking noise. I then opted for a pair of K&ns that are a direct replacement for the old ones in the air box. I even got the air box sand blasted and repainted. Gotta say there was a defiant increase in power and I never have to buy air filters again. Just wash and re oil! Also didn't need to adjust the mixture as it was fine. So I'd recommend it to be honest.

Also I'd suggest everyone has a check of this if looking for a power boost lol m.youtube.com/watch?v=IfU47Oqq9wAAt some point my carbs had got mixed up. When I swapped them around my car went like a rocket lol.

I don't thinks its worth it. If you are looking for better power and you dont know the history of your distributor, the rotor, the cap and plug leads or carbs, I would get the dizzy overhauled or buy a new good one, buy a good set of leads - I swear by magnecor as personal experience shows they are better than good silicon leads etc. then check the tune of the carbs to see how they are working. Doesn't matter how much air and fuel you are getting into the cylinder if you don't have a good spark at the right moment throughout the rev range. Yes it is expensive to do what I suggest but it brings reliability as well as performance. I had my TR6 dizzy overhauled by distributor doctor and I'm very pleased with the results. I put a new RPI dizzy n the rover I've gone a bit off topic here....stick to normal air filter, spend money elsewhere.
