Hi,
I have just purchased a P5B Coupe and I have problems starting it after a long run. It will start again after about an hour. Any ideas? It has a new solenoid and a recon starter, when I do try and Start it there is just a clicking noise.

Andy,
Where is the clicking noise coming from?
Does it sound electrical or mechanical?
It may be a slightly loose or dirty earth connection.

I had the same thing happen to me but mine was a dying battery so I fitted a new one. That's what I think, as you say it starts after an hour when it has rested . Check the solenoid connections too as Paul mentioned as they may be loose.

This is assuming the battery is ok!!
If the noise is near the starter motor check all is tight bolts on the motor and nuts on the solenoid, main cable to the solenoid and from the solenoid to the motor motor etc if all these checks are OK! and the "clunk" is from the motor for "sure" take it back it's rubbish the solenoid is working but not the motor. You can short out the two nutted connectors on the solenoid with a heavy pair of pliers to prove it!
Is the noise you hear near the fuse block under the bonnet? if so check volts at the 6RA near the heater box in and out (silver relay with 5 pins) then check volts in and out inhibitor switch on the gearbox then at the starter motor solenoid.

When it happens again The clicking noise, try and jump it off another car If it starts, its the battery,if it still clicks its the starter

It's definitely worth checking out the starter motor fixing bolts as I know of a similar problem and on checking these bolts they were very loose. Once tightened up no more problems.

I had that problem and it turned out to be loose interlock connexions. I was stranded in deepest rural france once and had to pull the leads off and join them together.

I had an identical problem - see my other post. Turned out to be the inhibitor switch (which was new). I just wasn't pushing it firmly enough into Park for the switch to "allow" the starter to do its thing.
Try firmly pushing the gear selector lever as far as it will go into Park or try starting in Neutral. Both worked for me.
