Cyf, The cheapest way to fix the problem is to put the P5B in the garage and go for a nice long drive in heavy traffic in the Range Rover. Then when you next drive the P5B you will quickly realize that there is no clonk anymore; just smoothness and silence.

Boys some of your drive train noise is incorrect adjustment of the BW35 kick down cable...too much pressure at idle...try backing it off a few turns at a time. Cyf, it doesn't clonk when it's cold because the gear oil in the diff is more viscous when cold. Try using a 50/50 mix of 90 and 140 wt gear oil (more viscous)

My English 'clonk' was going into gear, changing up through gears (unless under heavy acceleration, changing back down to first when coming to a standstill and finally when coasting about 30mph in D and then blipping the throttle. You can hear a clonk from the rear when it takes up the slack and then coasts again. I have a spare pair of half shafts as well, just in case.
I havent done this job before but Im presuming that when the half shafts and prop are removed the diff can be pulled and simply replaced like for like with the new one. Im assuming there arent any additional washers I need to insert when refitting apart from a new gasket?

Yes its a simple as that but some seem to have terrible trouble actually removing the half shafts as the hub flanges can corrode together (just a little!) and slide hammers are not the solution as the pressure is in the wrong place so just a few taps with a narrow drift on the stepped joint is all that is needed

Roy, your description suggest that a big portion of 'your' issue is too much pressure in the BW35...try backing off the cable adjustment. This what is causing the clonking as it drops back into 1st (at too high a speed) PS. Don't go for the hard/difficult/expensive fix before you try the simple ones first. (i.e. Don't make a mountain out of a mole hill unless you need the stress. )

Or not, more to the point. I only get a picture of a black and white TV, but no video
