After reading the article about disassembling the screen wash pump (thanks for the information, 'Chuck' Berry!) in the February 2014 issue of Take Five, I decided to tackle the screen wash of my car which hasn't worked for 18 years. Disassembly went fine and I even managed to unscrew the heavily corroded screws fixing the pump. In the pump cavity where the impeller is supposed to sit, there was a sticky black goo which I removed with a few cotton buds drenched in white spirit. The pump axle has a small square metal vane. I reassembled everything and the pump now turns happily, but no liquid is being moved. I suppose the sticky black goo was the remains of the impeller, so I'll have to try and build a new one myself. But what does it look like? Or can I solve this in another way? Thanks for your ideas.

If you are really desperate you could buy THIS ON EBAY or just look out for one at an autojumble or boot sale or something... The impeller is a star shaped rubber thing. The motor spindle is off centre in the pump cavity and the whole thing works a bit like a rotary vane compressor. Simon H

I just added a separate pump hidden along the inner wing and pumping through the cap. Looks standard unless you look closely.
I think the pump was about £5
