hello all, im about to but a p5b. the bodywork is above average abd the engine seems to run fine. It has been stored for a few years and requires an MOT. The sills need attention and the doors and post have minimal rust. The owner is genuine but i can do without a massive bill just to get it MOT'd and roadworthy. Whats the worst that could happen i ask myself at £1000!

If the sills require attention there is likely to be more hidden rust in the three parts that make them up. Look at all the links above and good luck with purchase and welcome
If you have to pay someone to repair it £1000 will not go very far at all.

I am composing a buyers guide at www.roverp5bduchess.co.uk It is not finished yet. I would have a look at it as most P5(B)'S are on the surface OK but deeper investigation can show more work then initially thought

If you mean the car cost £1000, then dont expect too much. You MAY be lucky, but if you can see the sills are knackered, its very highly likely that the bottom of the A posts, the D posts, inner rear wings and front inner wing box sections are on their way out too.
Many of these cars offered for sale at this sort of money look "above average" with their bodywork, but thats only on the surface. If the owner knows it IS genuinely sound or has been properly sorted, they are likely to want three times this figure (or more) at least.

im no p5 expert but it seems fairly solid. the bodywork is not obviosly rotting except for what i call surface rust on the lower doors. the owner is as genuine as the car and pointed out all he could, mainly positive stuff. ideally i would get it through an mot then drive and restore it bit by bit.

Try jacking the car up and tap the inner wings front and back with the handle of a screw driver.
If the car is poor underneath then you will soo know. the inner arches are bad so get right up to the top where the wings meet the body.
If you need to patch it up it would still give you years of service. No need to spend a fortune if you can weld yourself.

went to view a p5b last week as advertised on this site. Turned out to be a genuine solid car, 1 owner 26k miiles fsh. The engine had been tampered with and would not start but that was the only problem. I told the seller I would let him know in a couple of hours after I phoned a friend. My friend suggested I take a chance and buy it for that money. I called the seller back and we agreed a price over the phone and agreed I could pay the next day as I was on my way to work. Within an hour the seller called back to say another buyer was there and he wanted to buy it!! If I still wanted the car I must come back straight away with the cash or he would let it go!!! I said it could take an hour but he said he would sell it to the first person who came up with the cash and the other buyer would be back in an hour. 30 mins later I get a calll to say its now sold!!!!! How unfair is that. I just turned around a went home.

The engine was probably knackered anyway. I would not be suprised if he realised he was selling you a pup and thought twice about it. Whichever way, things happen for a reason so don't lose heart. It's out there somewhere.

Is it a line from a song by U2? " I still haven't found what I'm looking for"
Keep searching....... there's a car out there with your name on it. ;D
BTW: Is that 26,000 mile car still for sale on the club web site?

Hello all, finally found the one, even though it was in Aberdeen! Got a cheap flight up, bought it and had it transported back. First task was the MOT. It failed on horn not working, split rubber on wiper blades, 1 x perished tyre wall, o/s/r brake tested low and a blowing exhaust. All should be sorted tomorrow without breaking the bank. Even the tester was surprised. I'll keep you all informed and obviously be intouch should things go wrong. Anybody know how I upload a photo and maybe change the title of my thread?

happy new year all!
My new pride and joy is happily taking me to work and back as and when required. It starts on the key and drives great. Not too sure where to start even though she runs ok and looks fine. My plan is to spend a little often.; electronic ignition, fuel pump and fan, just to make her more everyday friendly. Any suggestions? Oh and a pair of front headrest would be nice.
Seasons Greetings

Fit an electric fan and dispense with the main one saves fuel as does a decent electronic ignition if you want to fit and forget. An electric pump is always good idea.
These are covered in various threads as are headrests but start by giving it a good service by changing all fluids/oils/filters/hoses and thermostat and then cleaning off underneath and undersealing/waxoiling or whatever your poison is. Lubicate your rear brake cylinders/tappets.
It sound like it runs well anyway but regular use does it a world of good and shows up faults quickly before they let you down
