This looks a lovely example of a P5b coupe, maybe what rover had in mind at the design stage but maybe costs to change tooling prevented this happening. Maybe they just decided to call a four door car a coupe. This car looks fantastic and the body changes seem to enhance the overall look of the car into something better in my view. Are there any more details on this forum regarding the changes made?

A very nice car Steve. I can't tell if the front doors have been lengthened, which is really a necessary element of this modification if reasonable access is to be gained for rear seat passengers entering and exiting the vehicle.

They look wider to me vince, the problem is access to the rear ie modding the seats!

Arden green Vince. This car was featured in Take Five whilst I had the honour of being Editor 8-)The doors were lengthened. I will try and find the issue and post it up on the forum

Thanks Glenn. I much prefer it to Juniper Green, which is the original colour my car (and rather bland in my view) It definitely makes more of a statement.

When Richard Spratley (R J Spratley) still had a website he had a feature on it titled (from memory) A coupe called Adam.
It's possible though this may have been the original Take 5 article or it may have been Richards own words.
It gave an overview - doors lengthened, seats made to tilt forward for rear seat passenger access etc.
Somewhere I might have an electronic copy...
I had some communications with Richard about his work some years ago but have no idea if he is still involved with P5's?
Was refurbishing Rostyles as well or am I getting confused?

Last I heard R J Spratley ceased trading as did their Rostyle Wheels ::)And yes the car was ADAM.

Changing the stainless around the top of the doors looks like a nice job, your handiwork John?

Glenn, I am pretty sure Richard Spratley had a slightly different article on his website. It is looking as if I may not have kept it but I will look further.
He also had a seperate article on another vehicle he had rebuilt and modified for a client. Again it was referred to by registration number - from memory it was something like C500.... or maybe CYK500?
Sometime later he advised me that one clients vehicle - possibly it was this one - had been written off and the engine was available for sale - a 4.6 unit with possibly custom manifolds or extractors as they call them in oz.
Possibly some members may have been familiar with this other interesting vehicle.
I have to say though that Adam from all photos I have seen is a stunning vehicle. If only the factory had gone down this path....
Also the colour is my favourite combination.

Hi Wajowen, the C500 (500 CBY?) plate is probably the panelcraft 3 litre convertible. That 4.6 litre one sounds like the Graham Rigby project. Sad if it is

You could probably adapt the seat mechanism from a 2-door Range Rover. Rather than tilting the whole seat as some do, the backrest drops forward and the whole seat slides forward, without disturbing the previous seating position when pushed back again. Maybe they just decided to call a four door car a coupe. Coupe has come to mean a 2-door car, but it originally meant that the body was cut (French) to shorten it or lower the roof.

Rover Co always liked to get it right but even then a Coupe was usually seen to be 2 door. I believe it was to have been called a Sportsman in line with the P2 4 light 4 door saloons but Standard Motor Co beat them to it in the late 1950's with their modified short lived Vanguard!
