I don't believe the inspectors from the insurance companies would have any clues of such a modification as long as it looks original on such an old car. How would they know? The same applies to MOT people. Cheers for that Steve, but I have got very cynical over the years (haven't we all) and I find insurance companies would find any excuse not to pay out. I personally would inform them for peace of mind but each and everyone to his own

Smallfry this is very interesting - a google image search shows it to be very, very similar to the ZF Volvo box. So similar it almost seems to be an evolution of the Volvo box but with a different casting where the mounting holes are. It seems to have 3, on an offset which could be workable depending on the size and spacing.
What I can't gauge is the size of the box....?
I have checked the equivalent oz models - VN through to VS Commodores but these seem to have all had steering racks....
Do you have a Volvo box to compare with?
If not maybe Enigmas or I can post dimensions by way of comparison?

Some further delving into the interweb has produced this; www.milleredp.com/~jem/galaxie/dec2008.htmlRefers to using the Omega box (or US equivalent) to convert a '64 Galaxie and advises there is no short supply of boxes.....

Specified as ZF Servotronic so it is an evolution of the ZF box but with an electronic component and also used in some BMW's - E39 540i/M5 and E38 740i/750i if the info. Is correct...

posted by smallfry. Another steering box which is cheaply available here at the moment "while stocks last", is the Vauxhall Omega B (Holden Commodore in Aus)It is very similar to the Volvo box, made by ZF, and is much more modern. I dont know how the bolt pattern and drop arm splines would compare though. I have got one in the garage and will drag it out and photograph it over the weekend Read more: roverp5.proboards.com/thread/8276?page=3&scrollTo=64298#ixzz33BE7bKJs
