A sad day today for the Reeve household. We had our Chocolate Labrador "Fudge" put down. He was nearly 14 and had some issues but we were not going to pay hundreds of pounds so we could have him for a bit longer. Nothing compared to losing a family member I know, but still sad at the same time. He was a great Rover

Sad news and a feeling I know only too well. I lost George (below) a short while after his pal Jack, who was a companion to us both. We had George for fourteen years and Jack for thirteen. All our dogs have to leave us is memories and these become more precious and a comfort as time goes by. After my loss,I said never again and yet a few weeks later adopted a big, sloppy but untrained Italian mastiff named Patty. She wont replace the others or lessen the pain of their passing but has carved a place for herself in our affections. I'm sad for your loss, I had to make the decision to end Georges life too, even when we know its the best decision,it makes it no easier.

Cheers lads, as I said I try to keep things in perspective, it's only a dog to many and I totally understand that sentiment to those who have not owned a dog. Kevbacon...a lovely dog btw

A good dog is almost a person. Have buried four so will not have another.
Commiserations Glen and family. At least he's no longer suffering.

Sounds like rover owners and dogs go hand in hand. We lost our lab at 14 too and despite the never having another promise - managed to adopt a 14 month old border collie soon after to keep our 6 year old border collie company. We've always been a 2 dog family.
I try to reason that they get a great life with us with no real worries and have the best time they could wish for. It does leave a massive hole though. Sorry to hear your sad news.

Colin Good point Colin, a very personal decision for all but for me it was a no brainer. I have been slightly taken aback by all the kind and thoughtful responses. Maybe I shouldn't have been as you are a great bunch Many thanks to all

I really was not going to add anything to this thread, because putting down the last dog was the hardest thing I have ever done, and I am a doctor. The vet could not have got there in time. Fortunately our first dog, it was planned and the vet visited to do the deed.
We now have two little brats Georgia and Flynn, both rescues, and both ridiculously loved. My theory is that it will be slightly easier if there are two. That way you still have one left to hug when that time comes round again as it will.

After I lost my last two dogs,I said never again and hung on for nearly a week before adopting this great lump of an Italian mastiff. She has been the most exasperating dog I've ever owned taking my tools, shoes, overalls and anything else she can find for trips round the garden, and has forced me to become much tidier as she is liable to confiscate any spare parts and hide them in her bed. I have always had dogs from rescue centres and recommend them as a four legged cure for much of lifes ills.
