Hello all, I'm in NZ and have a good friend who is a retired mechanic and he wants me to take his Rover P5B and do something with it! He has owned the car many years. I believe he purchased it and drove it home to his farm and it has sat idle in a dry shed now for approximately 20 years. The registration has expired but I have located the information from the Vehicle register so I would like some help Identifying exactly what variant it is. Chassis number :84100479 Engine number :84012243 Colour : Red Year (first registration in NZ): 1970 December 09 Mileage 88,000 mls I have searched the net to see if there was a listing of chassis numbers which is how I found the P5 club website! I believe the car is A coupe body in very good condition with little to no rust and an immaculate interior with all leather and wood in good condition. The engine runs well but the radiator has now developed some leakage and a rear brake has frozen so it will take a little work to get it mobile. His intentions were to give the car a repaint but he has moved to a smaller property and has other interests. Any help would be very much appreciated. Mike

Hi Ive just looked up James Taylors book Rover p5 and p5b the complete story and according to his numbers your car isa p5b saloon was one of 191 right hand drive export in 1970 the commission numbers were 841-00319 -00509.According to this book your car is a sedan not a coupe. You could contact the The British Motor Industry Heritage trust and get a copy of the factory record they are at Gaydon . We got one for our 1972 p5b and although the engine number and body number were not recorded they did have the chasis number and were able to record exterior colour trim, they were able to give us the build date dispatch date destination to who it went to and line number which were interesting . A bit like a birth certificate which we were able to pick up when we called in . They also suggested providing a photo of the car which was placed in the middle of the certificate. Good luck

My car was built on the 24th of March 1970 and despatched to the dealer in Melbourne on the 15th of April. By this stage the factory's record-keeping was less than satisfactory. According to the heritage certificate, my car was also built as a saloon, but by the time it reached Australia, it was a coupe.

Hello dodgemnz, Have a look here for my Rover 3 Litre books and manuals as I scan them. Not much there yet, I have a workshop manual if you need some sections I'll scan them first. Oscar

Thanks for the replies! Im hoping to get out to the car this week as its a little way out of the city and is now accessible. Im pretty sure its a coupe (Well I'm hopeful anyway!) as the current owner knows much about the family who had it as he used to pass by it when he was a rep for a tyre company. He tried to purchase it over a number of years before they agreed to let it go. He keeps telling me he wants someone to do something with it as no one in his family is interested in the car. I'm mostly into my european makes but my Dad has an Alvis Grey Lady and is very much into the preservation of that marque in NZ as a lot of them came here in the 50's. Most of the rovers I have contact with are after the BMC days as I own a 114GTI and often work on the later cars sorting out electrical issues with ABS,SRS etc! I do remember an old work mate when I was in the Aircraft engineering trade he had a black 3.5 sedan and he had some unfortunate events which started with a minor accident in the front and later led to the engine jumping off its broken mounts while towing a largish boat... that made the bonnet release and then it proceeded to fold its self over the front screen and roof! It wasnt a good start to a weeks holiday! Mike

My 114gti is racing green as well! It goes like mad for a little Rover! One of those cars you cant help keeping a smile on your face very revy motor and the close ratio Peugeot gearbox is a great combination.

Its been a while since i have posted about this car. A few things happened over the last year and the car was almost sold to someone else but that fell through so I now have collected it from the farm where it was located for more than 20 years in a dry but dusty barn! It looks a bit sad but is actually very sound. The car has some unusual features as I understand it being Coupe instruments and headrests which I am told were an option at the time of purchase? After a squirt of engine start it fired up fine on all 8! Will need fuel tank sorted and a check or replacement fuel pump no doubt
