Good afternoon! My 1972 P5B Coupé has the centre radio console. I also have an original radio (not connected). Now I would really like to have a proper radio in the car (yes, despite the V8 sound). I already have a whole bunch of speakers (original center speaker in the dashboard, two chrome ones - potentially very old - mounted underneath the dash resp. in the foot-well, two others on the parcel shelf in the back). Now I know that Peter has introduced the idea of hiding a modern radio behind the center console (glove box), but since I have the radio/speaker console instead, I wonder why it shouldn't be possible to hide an amplifier somewhere, along with a detached display that would allow me to i. e. tune in to a FM radio station or play music from a phone. However, I've just searched the web and, again (not for the first time!), gave up after more than two hours - completely frustrated. Does anybody have a radio whose amplifier/body hides somewhere and that comes with a separate display/control unit that can be hinged or that may swing out when desired? Cheers, Olaf

My photos have been a victim of photobucket. The rover radio panel has 2 bolts at the bottom of each side. Just remove one on each side and cut the tail end off, this will allow the panel to hinge. This is one of the attempts I have done. I mounted the modern radio on the rover brackets. modified the original panel. And cut an old radio up an used the facia. You can get modern radios that work on remote control. so you could fit on in the boot, under the dash or a seat even.

Tried to get few more photos. This should give you a better idea of what I did. I was never happy with the locking method but have some new latches that I need to try out.

Thanks everybody for your input! And sorry for the late reply, I'm a bit slow presently (too much work). What I was really thinking of was a radio that could be hidden under the seat or somewhere else out of sight. This would require the "control unit" to be separate from the amplifier, connectors and what not, but both could be connected to each other via a cable, with the remote control unit located somewhere around the steering wheel (I could even stow it away on the facia panel and pull it out of there to i. e. tune to a different radio station). Note the word "radio" - usually I prefer to listen to some radio station during longer travels, so it's not about a Bluetooth device only, even though I do think that streaming via Bluetooth (and maybe USB) should be possible too. Most of what I found on the web were devices that accept a Bluetooth stream, but nothing else. This way however the only way to listen to a radio station would be through an internet radio station, that just doesn't make much sense to me. Now I don't really see as to why there shouldn't be two pieces of hardware; the scenario also doesn't mean it would have to be some pre-defined form factor. But, what can I say, I haven't found anything yet. [...] you can get modern radios that work on remote control. so you could fit on in the boot, under the dash or a seat even. Now that really got me thinking and I did another intensive web-resarch last Sunday, looking for remote controlled "modern" radios. Not easy to research either, what with most of all people wanting to control their smartphones via the radio, not the other way around. Also, the law here in Germany prohibits the use of your phone while driving. Stupid or not - fiddling around with your radio while driving not addint to safety either - this includes any action performed on/with the phone, so a remote control app would mean that you could loose insurance. I'll have to do some more thinking around this. I do know that it would take ages until I would find the time to modify the car's interior (and I don't know how to weld either), so I was really looking for a solution that would allow me to leave the existingThanks everybody for your input! I bought a radio/cdplayer with a motorised flip down fascia that looks like a big old ash tray when its not in use. I did nip out to the car and take some pics but since photobucket went all "monetising" I can't post pictures.

It was electrical wire I used when the mk1 latch didnt hold the cover up. I do have a more robust latch to try. The sony unit I have has a remote which I have on the column but you can also get a wire free remote. rm x4asI have one of these. wire free remoteThere is loads of room under the front parcel shelf, you can mount a radio there and either use the wired remote or the wire free version. once the stations are preset you wouldnt have to touch it. The wire free remote could be fixed with a piece of velcro.

Cheers mates! Haven't got any further as of yet, just can't seem to find the time. The current plan is to find a local specialist. I'm just so decadent, aren't I. Cheers, Olaf
