Having viewed reports on stainless steel bumpers and the problems fitting them, I will go with my first instinct and have my original bumpers re chromed. There are many reasons for this : It is a classic car (1966) I am trying, as far as possible, to keep to the original specification. The bumpers were, I believe nickel chromed. The bumper has a 'bluish' tint to its chrome finish. I can get my bumper, complete with its over riders, re chromed to this specification, for £300-00. I have got a company in Hull, which has been recommended by a friend of mine who has already had work done by them, with very good results. What is the point of paying £900-00! to get bumpers which have 'problems' with fitting them! What do other members think?

Each to his own. I fitted stainless steel to mine,at the time the price for a pair was £700. They will certainly out live me (unless they get bent) In terms of the colour, as my old mum would say "a blind man would love to see it" certainly no one has ever commented on mine so presumably haven't noticed any difference. I found with a bit of fettling they fitted well and the workmanship is excellent. The only down side is that they scratch easier than chrome (being softer) but with care any marks can be polished out. Your quote is a lot less than I was quoted,even for a bumper I had welded and polished I was quoted from four to five hundred pounds.

I had a guy come to see me yesterday with a Mk2 Zodiac.He had the bumpers rechromed a year ago. Although the back one is still OK the front is showing signs of flaking at the edges in a couple of places. At least with stainless this isn't a problem I'll have. As an aside, I have been selling tools for more years than I care to remember,this year I have had more complaints of poor chroming than in all the other years added together. Thats from various makers not just one. In each case it seems the chrome is flaking. With spanners or sockets this can be quite dangerous as the chrome plating is strong and very thin,it can act like a razor blade and given that tools are used where oil and dirt are likely,inflict deep and contaminated cuts. With bumpers and spanners or indeed most things,you often get what you pay for but personal recommendation based on past experience is probably worth more than any makers claims.
