I did a search but alas did not find what I was looking for? Is the Binnacle made from bakelite or just some common plastic? Is it sprayed with that black crinkle finish paint like on MG's ?
I decided to give the chrome switch surrounds a little polish with autosol and well it left a mark on the binnacle next to one? My clumsy sausage fingers!
So do I use boot polish or Humbrol semimatt black paint or similar?

I know what you mean. The outer surface has a rather soft layer but i don't believe it is paint The inside looks like normal plastic. I am pretty sure it is not bakelite

My Mk1 binnacle is shiny plastic and I expect it was upgraded to a dull finish because of glare issues. The shaped pieces behind the switches does look like Bakelite but i cant be sure about the facing material.

The Binnacle is plastic and has a stippled coating probably paint of some sort as it can be scraped off!

Yes, it's painted with a matt textured paint. Paint stripper will remove it quite well. I think the plastic is Bakelite - it's very brittle and you can see 'filler' in the plastic when you sand it (Bakelite was quite often mixed with sawdust as a filler, and it looks a lot like that).

Early Mk1's were bare - clearly not durable so given a plastic jacket

Thank you everyone I think some dabbing of matt black paint should hide my little mistake?
Funny isnt it for a car built from left over girders, brick conveniences and probably old aircraft parts they end up with a flimsy binnacle? Its like they predicted our future today!😁

Yes you are correct Richard it is a form of Bakelite
