Hi all. I've just become the new owner of a smoke grey P5 3 litre reg number 262JPB. Apparently its the oldest surviving p5 auto in exsistance...or so i've been told. Does anyone on here know about it or maybe someone use to own it?. Its currently undergoing a full body restoration and hoping to get it back to its former glory by the Autumn. Cheers.

Well done - not heard of that one. There is thread about oldest Mk1's try SEARCH. Any pictures yet? Any documentation to support its age apart from DVLA.
JPB was issued by Surrey CC only in Jan 1959 which makes it seem one of the early ones likely built late 1958. If so it will have had a number of unique features including drum front brakes although most will have been converted early on.
I hope these unique features can be retained/restored as so many are lost.
Mono or Duotone?

Considering it is almost 60 years old its in very good condition. It has the disk brake conversion but otherwise retains the early features. Good luck and I hope it keeps its plate

I think its said elsewhere to be the 19th produced going by the chasssis number. Does this mean that mine (6259-01044) is the 44th or 1,044th as it was built in June 1959 - still early. Or where is 19 to be found please?

Not always as they did not finish them in order but reasonably close

actually weren't the sub-frames the same colour as the car? In which case I can imagine more colour bunched than numbers! The line number ticket will be closest date which Gaydon will have.

They were enamelled black by the chassis manufacturers Tompsons. Rover just fitted the components on and then bolted to the painted bodyshell

I believe this car spent some years as an exhibit in a motor museum somewhere in England, after passing through a dealer in the south of England it spent about a year in the hands of an owner in the Edinburgh area. It was sold back to the (same?) dealer and was then noted as being on the stocklists of various dealers until its recent sale. AS I recall, when in Scotland the car was in fair condition as far as the body / paint/ interior was concerned, but it was somewhat lacking in electrical reliability. It certainly sufferred a "failure to procede" on the occasion of a SARR road run, stalling at the fuel pumps at Tesco Ferrytoll and requiring outside assistance. It did make it to the rally next day! It's mono and has the disc conversion.

I am in the same position at the moment, im restoring bodywork on my mark 1 p5 it was built November 7th 1958.Should be ready for next years rover club rally, look forward to seeing you all. Mine is manual with front disc conversion, it has only 36k original miles so bodywork is fairly good condition.

erm - not sure what connection my name has with this post but my P5 3 litre has a build date of 26th June 1959. Might be a thread of a few years ago.
