How about we call this topic, "what have you done to your P5 today." ........ I'll tell you what I did on mine today. Same thing I did yesterday, and the month before that, and the 6 years before that. B****r-all. (We'll see what the ProBoard's robo-censor makes of that!)

Thanks John, Vince, and Brendan. While I appreciate your LIKES for my post, I am quite surprised by them. But after searching the forum, I have discovered your conundrum; there is no DEPLORABLE button. David, can you rectify this?

Title now sorted to cover all possibilities/flavours. As for the button Warwick... sorry, cannot be done!

Got the underbonnet lights working (could do with new lenses), replaced all 4 interior lights & connected them properly so they work as they should, got the brake warning working, got the rear heater light working, tested the boot light circuit & that all works but I haven’t got a bulb, stripped & cleaned the number plate/ reverse lamp assembly. Who says the light nights are finished?

Did some more mechanical maintenance on my MK3 coupe. There was an odd ball sensation when taking off from stationary at various times and load...sometimes felt like a judder and at other times like a restrained knock. It turned out to be a loose centre bearing support for the tailshaft! Under torque it would rotate/lift slightly on it's rubber mounts causing misalignment (out of phase issues) of the tailshaft. * Ahh! the dreaded centre bearing support rears it's ugly head. Definitely worth checking if you've never gone there!

One tiny little job tonight, replaced the bonnet safety catch, then took the car along to the local cafe for the Wednesday night car meet

Poor starting & unwillingness to idle has been my project for tonight. Starts & ticks over lovely now at the expense of poor running higher up the Rev range, further tickling required. Also fitted my rather crude but cheap & effective electronic ignition which made it a lot smoother

Hmmmm it’s even worse to start from cold now, I think I might order a couple of repair kits for the carbs. Disappointed with that, I turned to less frustrating jobs & repaired the wiring to the n/s/f side repeater as it had dropped off the back of the lamp, it was fun feeding the wires back through the wing, in the end I pulled them back through into the car & fed a length of brake pipe through the wing and through the grommet hole behind the kick panel & fed the wires through the pipe then soldered them to the lamp. I’m awaiting parts now so I can do some further improvement work so while i’m waiting I think the next job is to complete the carpet install that the previous owner had made a start with

Had a bit more fiddle with the carbs & found it seems to overfuel massively on the l/h carb, removed it, stripped it & found nothing obvious...............annoying

Re the underbonnet lights, the complete units are available from Wadhams, Moss etc. They are however the wrong bases for the P5. You can use the clear dome though on your existing units.

I took my differential to Hardy Engineering at Leatherhead to have it checked over. Another member took his diff to them and they replaced all the bearings and shims where neccessary. Have been able to polish the inside of the casing

Well if it ain’t broke, fix it until it is...............that’s the way it’s been for me this last few days. After my carb fiddling failed to make the car run any better, if anything it got worse, I have come to the conclusion the electric fuel pump is overcoming the needle valve on the l/h carb. I spoke to Burlens who were very helpful & they agreed my theory is perfectly plausible, so i’ve ordered a carb service kit from them. Sadly it arrived today & was incorrect........of course I was forgetting the fact the aed has been removed and therefore the carbs are sporting adjustable jets instead of wax stat ones, another kit will be on it’s way shortly. Tonight I have disposed of the electric pump and it’s very unprofessional wiring with a view to reinstating the mechanical one. I just need the fuel pipe that runs from the pump up to the filter. One question though, when I reinstate the return line should it have a restrictor in the line or is the fact that it’s a much smaller bore pipe enough for it to prevent the fuel bypassing the carbs altogether?

You should have no problem with an electric pump Colin as long as it's max 4psi! the black spill return just leave as is.

No idea what pressure it’s running but sometimes it doesn’t shut itself off which tells me the fuel is going somewhere and it’s not coming out of the overflows, plus the thick black smoke out the back & the fact that it blackens plugs 1,7,4&6 points at the l/h carb being the culprit

The floats don’t appear to be adjustable on my carbs
