I posted some entries last year about replacing the current rear numberplate on my car with an oriiginal blank shaped plate on which could be added the numbers and digits or just a new plate. I had a lot of useful pics and comments so ordered what I thought would be new stock from JRW. What I have received today is a pressed piece of steel, shaped and cut to the correct dimensions. What I was expecting was an unpainted black pressed aluminium plate with a proper beading. Before I contact JRW could somebody confirm that the original was pressed aluminium with a proper beaded edge? Thanks all.

I would agree with your expectations although I wouldn't necessarily expect it to be black, just aluminium. I sprayed my original plate with matt black paint when refurbishing. I don't know how practicable it would be to alter an original plate to a different registration mark.
(by the way, why start a new thread? It's just more clutter on the board.)

Sorry, I didn't mean unpainted black, I meant unpainted I have emailed JRW and asked him to take it back.....it's rubbish. I was almost certain it should have been ali. I'll contact David Green.

A couple of years ago at Bromley pageant someone had a supply of original old stock ones (which did have the raised edge and were ali). They were going for about £30 each I think. Might be worth taking a look this year?

Cross plies You are correct originals are pressed ali with raised edg on bottom & sides. You can fill holes and redrill for your numbers. Or as I did stick a standard format plate on the original with strong double sided tape. It looks OK if your using pre 1973 rules silver/black digits plates

Thanks everybody. David has come up trumps again and is sorting me out with a "proper" plate I have a 1971 car so can use the silver digits/numbers so will first restore the plate and then decide how to mount the digits etc. When I bought my car in 1980, Hurst Park Autos had replaced the original aluminium plate with their own reflective plate so the original drillings are still showing on the boot lid.I replaced the reflective plate with a black and silver one about 20 years ago but the quality wasn't that good and it looks a bit rough now, that's why I'm going back to the original "quality" plate.

David has now sent me a "proper plate" in double quick time......I'm still exchanging unfriendly emails with a well known supplier of Rover parts about the plate sent to me by him " My registration has the same number of digits/numbers as the plate David sent to me and I would like to rebuild the plate with digits/numbers directly attached if possible. Anyone know of suppliers of the right size figures? If not, I'll get a plate made and stick it to the restored backing plate. Should the plate be finished in matt or gloss black?

Well everyone is right, you can have 'semi-gloss','semi-matt'. 'satin', and 'matt'. If you haven't got the right amount of gloss or lack of it, add a bit of flour from the larder to gloss to gradually make it more matt. Work that lot out !

How long do you cook it for John? Gas Mark? too late to add flour I am afraid so it will stay Satin as the digits are all on

I'm just about ready to finish spraying the numberplate blank sent to me by David following my disappointment with the one supplied by JRW. I have had a salutary lesson in dealing with JRW over the last few weeks and I have well and truly burned my bridges with him in respect of any future dealings. I report the following without comment so as to avoid any libellous statements. The unsatisfactory blank plate which I returned to him on 23062007 has allegedly not turned up despite it being well wrapped and properly addressed and I am now trying to make a claim through Royal Mail. At this point, I am down £35.25 which is £20 for the plate and £15.25 for the VAT and P&P. (It cost me £1.92 to return it) We exchanged very unfriendly emails and he seems to have taken very personally my comments about the product. He also made some rather disparaging remarks about the quality of the parts from other well known suppliers of Rover parts It is, of course, possible that the large package has been lost............................................ Needless to say, I will not use him again although I wish I had been less aggressive in my initial emails to him and in the letter enclosed with the returned item. Had I bitten my tongue, then I might have had my money refunded so learn by my mistake

02, I wasn't rude just annoyed about the quality of what he supplied. From time to time on this board you will note that other customers have found his approach to customer relations a bit wanting and I met someone at the Powderham Rally recently who had also crossed swords with him. Fortunately, JRW is not the only supplier for our cars and EBAY etc is now a very valuable source and most P&P from other suppliers is not silly like JRW's.

Please forgive my ignorance,I'm still fairly new to this Rover owning game, but is JRW just one person then? I had always visualised a heaving warehouse, buzzing with forklifts.........

I know JRW (who I believe to be just one man nowadays) have been out of circulation for a couple of weeks as I spoke to him on Tuesday last week to get a couple of bits and pieces. He said he'd been out for 9 days and was catching up, my order would probably not go out until Friday and I couldn't pick up in person (I was up that way and visiting Martin Robey Jaguar in Nuneaton anyway). He definitely seemed "subdued". I also mentioned his website was down at that time:- he expressed surprise/disbelief and it was up and running again 2 hours or so later. Having said that, all I ordered turned up yesterday and seem to be good quality (compared to so many Stag pattern parts I've picked up! ). There aren't that many other suppliers (E-Bay based ones seem excessively expensive in so many cases, not just Rover P5) so I'll try and stay on the right side of him!

After all the hassle here is the restored backplate and the new pressed ali plate. The finish is satin black on an etch primer. The plate drillings match up with the predrilled holes on the boot so any 2nd hand predrilled plate is probably going to line up. I'm pleased with the result which will look great on the car
