Hi, just a quick question to see if people have a preference. Its a general question that could apply to a Rover V8 engine or any engine. In my case it will be a jag 3.8 engine.
If an engine has not been run in many years (9 years) which is best to pour down the spark plug holes initially? I want to make sure I don't damage the pistons and bores before I try and turn the engine and start it. 1) WD40 2) Diesel 3)A.N. Other
What is your experience?

I'm with Warwick on the ATF. It's designed to lubricate and operate within the fine tolerances of a transmission's valve body as well as having other beneficial properties.

If I had to store an engine for a long time, I'd pour ATF down the plug holes and just leave it. If it was an engine that was unknown and could have been dry for a long time and perhaps all gummed up around the rings, I'd use diesel first and leave it for a while. It's thinner than AFT and it's also a solvent. But I'd follow up with a good soaking with ATF before I tried turning it over.

I’ll leave it in there for a week before trying to turn it over. Fingers crossed

Should work okay, Roy. The main advantage of ATF is that it's just as slippery, but much thinner. But a word of warning! Whatever you do, do not, I repeat, DO NOT, use orange juice. Even though it may taste better.
