My recently refurbished gearbox is leaking more than I am comfortable with. I am unsure where the leak is coming from and it seems to be from the top of the box. I got underneath tonight and feeling around the top cover there doesn't seem to be anything coming from the edges of the top cover or where the selector shafts enter the gearbox. The dipstick seems like the most likely culprit, is this likely? My plan was to pull the floor out again to do a complete inspection but if it is the dipstick perhaps a plug with an o ring might be a solution through the inspection bung.
Has anyone got any experience with this?
Cheers Martin

Are you sure the box is not overfilled? Has the overdrive the correct level? Oil can migrate between the 2 although it should not

Hi Phil I think I have solved the problem. The level is at the high level indicated on both dip sticks.
I took the carpet and floor section out, cleaned the casings, not that there is any dirt accumulated yet and went for a 10 mile drive.
There seemed to be two points that some oil was coming from. The filler cap with it's 54 year old cork was leaking slightly but the bulk of the oil was coming from the little rubber mushroom seal at the end of the gallery that has the detent balls for the selector shafts. The seal was nice and soft and semingly in good condition but not a very tight fit in the bore.
To resolve these I turned a new filler cap from a piece of aluminium with an o ring to replace the cork seal. The mushroom seal was replaced with an aluminium mushroom also with an o ring.
Another blat down the motoway with the cover off the floor and no leaks.
The driveway will tell the definitive story but I am optimistic.
Cheers Martin
