Hi all, am fitting a recon engine to 72 V8, it would appear to have substantially smaller mounting hole for starter motor in the block (about 70mm across). Existing motor won't fit, any ideas what starter/part no. would? Thankyou.

I have late and early engines no difference = starter motor is standard Lucas PE

Thankyou Phil, so even a later engine fitted to say, a range rover or sdi would have same basic dimensions? Curiouser & curiouser! Thanks again.

Most used the same Lucas motor but probably not all.

I can't help re part numbers but the P6s had two different sizes of starter motor, the later one has a smaller diameter motor and casting, however, I can't find changeover date.
The Range Rover changed to a 'metricated' starter motor in Nov 1973, so I'm guessing that it's the later, smaller version.
It's an assumption but perhaps the P6 changed at the same time, which was roughly the time (1974 model year) that the lower compression V8 was fitted to the P6. Of course, P5B production would have finished a few months prior to that.
Range Rover starters up to Nov 73 were Lucas M45 pre-engaged. From Suffix C (Nov 73) they were Lucas 3M 100 metricated with a sealed casing, then from DA series in Nov 1986 Lucas M78R (RR info from 'Original Range Rover' book)
I understand RR starters won't necessarily fit the cars as the solenoid is located differently, but whether they're changeable I don't know.
Doesn't answer your question but might assist. What is the origin of the recon. engine?

The Lucas P5B starter motor was the M45G pre-engaged. I cannot have P6Bs and I am not familiar with them but it seems from the last post you have at the late P6B block at least and perhaps an SD1?
The engine number will verify this easily
