Hello all! I just wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction of where to look to locate the voltage-stabiliser, up behind the dashboard/ instruments somewhere please? I suspect my stabiliser has developed a fault, as the Rev-Counter is very erratic - jumping from 500 to 3, 4, 5 or 6000RPM and the Oil Pressure gauge has started messing around too - it started fluctuating, from showing no oil-pressure, then normal and then full (max) pressure or anywhere in-between and back to zero again...but now it just shows max-pressure constantly from start-up irrespective of RPM... I've changed the Rev-Counter three times now, for known good working units - but the same thing keeps happening...hence suspecting the voltage-stabiliser is at fault... Any help/ thoughts would be much appreciated - Ta! Guy.

Not the voltage stabilizer as this just for temp & fuel and is on one of the speedo clamp nuts. Rev counters go erratic as the capacitors and transistors age. They are not very accurate anyway just a decorative item. Plenty on SEARCH. It may just be a poor connection for?
The oil gauge sender diaphragm rots and sticks.

My oil gauge was erratic also, and easily fixed by replacing the sender. I also had to replace the voltage stabilizer but failed to ground it properly. It was still erratic until I ran a ground wire to it and it seems to be working OK now. As Phil said, my tachometer was erratic until I finally had it professionally rebuilt with new capacitors and transistors and seems OK now. I also had my speedometer rebuilt but it failed a few hundred miles later along with the angle drive on the transmission (sheared off the square cable there-see mossmotors.com/media/instructions/021-511.pdf ). I believe that was due to not using a copper washer with the angle drive to distance it properly, thus allowing excess pressure placed on it. I rebuilt the speedometer again myself and replaced the angle drive with a new one and copper washer and it seems to be working OK so far. The angle drive is the same one used on MGBs.

Hi Phil/ Ken,
Thanks for the info there gents - its very much appreciated!
Regarding the stabiliser being clamped under one of the speedo clamp bolts - mine doesn't have anything clamped under the speedo retaining bolts other than a couple of earthing wires - could this be the problem?...if so, do you have any idea what type/ colour of wiring I'm looking for please???
I've bought a 10v electronic stabiliser unit to replace the original bi-metalic version - hopefully this should be OK?
Many Thanks in advance...
Guy.

I used an electronic 10-volt stabilizer and it is working fine.

The earthing tags (black) should be there incl one for the Rev counter. Your electronic unit will need an earth as well if not earthed via its case
The stabiliser is the common small metal rectangular box with 3 green ignition on feeds and 1 light green cable (which go the fuel & temp gauges only) on the 2 terminals. This not to be confused with the flasher can which may be round or rectangular and also has green wires but one has a brown tracer. It depends on the year and who has been there before! You need to consult the wiring diagram in the handbook or WSM or if a club member a large colour version can be supplied in Pdf form by me.
What model do have as 3 Litres have the stabiliser on the rail near the handbrake
