This is a real request for help. While stripping down the engine compartment of my 3-litre, I came across the following object lying on the floor. It has to have come either from the 3-litre or from a tool I was using on it. Apart from the usual spanners, I have used an impact driver and a pneumatic needle de-rusting tool. Here is the part: It seems to be made of the same stuff that impact sockets are made of, but the two airtools have not been apart, and still work just fine. So I am mystified. Can anyone identify this part?

It's shaped like a large clevis pin but doesn't seem to have a hole at the end for a cotter pin, so seems probably unlikely. There is an idler pulley for the fan belt that is adjusted on a swivel mount to tension the belt at the front of the engine. It may swivel on a pin, but there'd have to be some way to hold that from falling out. Or perhaps a swivel pin for the bonnet hinges? Otherwise I'd think it would be more likely related to the air tools. Let us know what you find.

It looks like a cotter pin but cannot see any hole at the R/H end for a split pin.

If its up front I would go for hand brake linkage part, as above replies have said there should be a hole for a split pin if not marks for a 'C' clip.
