I’m having great fun trying to work out why my headlights are still flickering! Going through a long list of things to check I removed the main live cable and attached 3 separate cables with ring connections from the live side of the starter solenoid, cleaned them all up and reconnected them. Reconnected battery to find my ignition and oil light on with my keys still in my pocket!! Took everything back off and made sure nothing was touching the chassis etc but still the same, a friend told me to take the wire off the small oil light switch which extinguished both lights, started car but was unable to turn off on the key had to remove negative wire from coil! What have I broke this time. Any advice as always appreciated.

It would help if you said what model of car.
The battery power supply is divided into the "always on" which in a 3-litre MkIIb at least powers the horn, the lighs, the interior lights, and the clock, and the "switched by ignition" which powers everything else.
It is possible you have transposed something between these two.

It would help if you said what model of car. It is possible you have transposed something between these two. Thanks for your thoughts and sorry I should of said it’s a 67 p5b coupe! I got back under it today with the mindset it couldn’t be anything other than what I had touched, I decided to remove one of the smaller cables on the positive side of the solenoid one at a time, on removing the smaller yellow cable the car started as normal with everything back the way it was!! Could this be a redundant ballast resistor cable which had been disconnected and I mistakenly refitted it not realising, I have a coil which does not need a ballast resistor. It is the redundant shunt, what have you done with the other end - you really need to consult the wiring diagram.
The club does a large colour version for members. I can email you a Pdf if you send me your membership number and personal email address
There are numerous places that can cause flickering lights especially if the screen has leaked in the past

Regarding headlights I’ll carry on ticking off my list!!

The other end should be taped off but its important you find it. You must have more faulty connections or components and perhaps incorrect alterations by POs as the wiring is logical durable basic and simple compared to many later cars even though still demonstrated some Rover quirkiness of old in the lighting circuitry!
