its been a long time since ive had my rover on the road but I'm now slowly getting there. I wonder if anybody can help me and tell me what type of brake fluid I should put in as I see that the old recommendations are no longer available so I wonder is it as straight forward as just putting in dot 4 . My car is 1973 coupe. The system is empty so also wondering what sort of capacity it is as well so I know how much fluid I will need. Thanks if anyone can help.

By "empty" do you mean that it was drained, cleaned out with meths and sealed, or there was a leak and it has not been refilled since?
Chances are that you will need to strip the calipers, slave cylinders, booster and master. If you find much corrosion damage, then you should consider replacing all the solid brake lines.
Flexible lines are worth replacing regardless.

Hi I am new to the forum and computers so please bear with me. .thankyou for the info. It has been a very long time since I worked on the car, so I am trying to remember and learn about my p5. I had a bad motorcycle accident, lost most things but through thick and thin I managed to keep hold of my coupe. . . The brake lines were dismantled back then so there has been no fluid in the system ever since. I intend to go through it one piece at a time. . So far the rears have been overhauled, pipes have been assembled and all handbrake rods and linkages to. At the moment I am just getting it to a stage of moving it around as opposed to driving it. . Many thanks for your help

Pleased that you are getting on with your Coupe and I am sorry to hear about your accident. You may find the P5OC FB group useful especially for pictures and also the SEARCH on this forum contains much info

You probably already know this, but I am putting in a vote here for a power brake bleeder. It requires a compressed air source. I borrowed one in a friends workshop to bleed and refresh the fluid on my wifes subary following a repair. I am not making this up: I went around each wheel just once, and the job was done. I have since bought my own on eBay to do the brakes on my 3-litre, and only went around twice to each wheel and the job was done. I look forwards to doing the same on the P4 which previously had been a complete sausage to work on.
