I'm having a problem that I'm hoping someone here can help with. The joint in the driveshaft, just to the rear of the carrier bearing is slipping. I've had it apart and was surprised that it isn't keyed. There is a slot in the outer part of the joint but no place to place a key in the interior section. Other than tightening the bolt down to 5K footpounds, what keeps the two parts from slipping? This is one of the last problems that I'm having and I'm somewhat at loose ends on a solution.
Thank you in advance,
David California

Thanks! That's kinda what I thought there should be. I'll take a closer look when I get it out of the car and taken apart probably this weekend.

I put a note out to the Rover club in Canada/US and the consensus is that the woodruff key may have broken off and would just need to be tapped out of the grove and replaced. I sure hope so!

I pulled the driveshaft this weekend and found the bits of the woodruff key. I was able to tap it out of both the slot in the outer and inner parts of the joint. With the bits I tapped out, I was able to purchase a new key though I did have to do a bit of light filing to get the key into the inner slot. Tightened down the nut holding it all together with some locktite on the nut, made sure the cotter pin was in correctly so the bolt won't come loose and put it back in the car. Used the car to get to work today (a 50 mile drive though it is mostly downhill [4000 Feet to about 450 feet in elevation]) with no problems or vibrations. I do have another question about the joint. Should there be two woodruff keys, one on each side of the cone? The outer piece has two slots but I could only fine one on the inner piece. Wasn't sure if the second inner slot might have been hard to see with the two halves rubbing against each other. I'm tempted to contact David Green and buy a spare front drive shaft and see how many keys it has! Thanks for listening!

Thanks! Well, due to a problem with Proboards, I sent the prior note 4 times! It kept telling me that there was a problem and couldn't complete the action, looks like it did every time! Sorry about that!
Good to know that there should be two keys! Thought that might be the case and was thinking that having two keys would provide the redundancy to keep either key from shearing in two. Looks like I get to pull the driveshaft this coming weekend (again!).
