Does anyone have experience of replacing footwell carpets to a close colour of the originals? In my original sales brochure Saddle Tan carpet is listed optionally to all exterior colours and I think this is what both my Rovers have. However Coverdale don't recognise Saddle Tan but are sending me sample options from their current range. Have any Members found a close match?

As far as I'm aware there were only ever two carpet colours on the P5B, and cars with Saddle Tan seats had Mortlake Brown carpets.
Can't help re how accurate any replacements might be.

Out of interest, which brochure do you have that refers to Saddle Tan carpets? I've just looked at some of mine, inclding older P5 ones, and the only reference that I can see is to 'heavy pile carpets' but no mention of their colour.
However, I don't have any separate individual colour charts and now can't even remember if they even produced any.

Tony - I paid £35 for an original rare sales brochure 740. The front cover shows a 3 1/2 litre facing left. Inside the back cover it reads General Specification. In a text panel to the seven centre showing Colours and Trim. The only trim common to all the colours is Saddle Tan. Frankly that doesn't suggest the colour I have but it is common. Mine is a neutral very light green or beige. I have found a similar colour to mine on ebay: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255008832582?hash=item3b5fb5fc46:g:GF0AAOSwcJpfcjO5

There were only 2 carpet colours on P5Bs. Neither weather well. The Mortlake Brown fades in the sun and darkens in sections elsewhere out of the sun. The Silver Grey looked really nice when new but this darkens and browns to become a generally lighter patchy version of the Mortlake Brown. It stains easily as well
P5s had a much better range of colours but late Mk3s had a reduced range of different shades

Eric My brochure is no. 718, quite an early one. Assuming yours is basically the same as mine, the section you refer to Colours and Trim, only relates to external colours and seat colours, not carpets. Saddle Tan leather (+ associated vinyl) was available with all exterior colours. Assuming your carpets are original, I'm confident that they were originally Mortlake Brown; unfortunately, as Phil says, they fade and,in my opinion, they're (P5B) not as good as those in the earlier P5s. Others might disagree, but that's just my view, and doesn't help you As you mention Saddle Tan, I'm assuming that that is the colour of your seats, am I correct in that assumption?

Thanks Tonys and Phil. My 1969 P5B is all Rover white with ebony "trim" as I must now call it! This screenshot is from the actual brochure which shows the carpet again although remember that my upholstery is ebony. The carpet is the same as green P5 Mk1 in my ebay link previously shown. prnt.sc/1u84eum

Eric That carpet colour is the one officially known as Silver Grey, which was fitted when Ebony or Mulberry (as in your photo) 'trim' were specified. Saddle Tan was a fairly dark brown, although a lot of them have faded over the years; the (much)lighter 'browns' were Tan, and Sandalwood on the P5s. In my experience, the brochure colours often seem different to reality; I recall looking at P5Bs when they were new or fairly new and the Mulberry often seemed darker in real life than in your photo. Also, the (early) brochures show brown trim which looks, to me, to be much lighter than any Saddle Tan cars I've seen, but as the cars photographed were pre-production models, I've often wondered whether they (brown trim) were in a colour that never made production, perhaps a final P5 colour. Having said that, the majority of P5Bs that I have experience of, or have just seen, have had Buckskin trim. However, Ebony always looked the same shade of Black The difficulty now always is 'what's the history of the car' over the past 50 years!

agreed Tonys - printed colours are never accurate. I wanted to use replacement in the floor pans only to avoid the transmission tunnel and gearbox. Hence I did get someone to get a reasonable match but the quality was bad - worn through to the hemp string in a few years. Not easy to find better carpet fitters at a reasonable cost so my search will have to continue.

My car has a mulberry interior with silver grey carpets, this picture is fairly acurate of an original carpet.
