Hi all I have got myself a car at last she is being delivered to me this afternoon I can not wait I am well happy.
The first thing I want to get as a temporary measure and for later on when need be is a car cover can anyone please recommend a decent 1 and that is a good fit till I get a garage sorted ?

Hi Dean
Congratulations on joining the wonderful world of the P5. I do hope you enjoy your car!
I have a cover for my P5B Coupe which I have used continuously for the last couple of years. It fits well and I have been very pleased with it. It is a Galactic Premium Outdoor Car Cover. I cannot remember from where I purchased it other than that it was via the net, but I am sure a web search will find it.

Just dug out the paperwork for my cover and it was supplied by PJ Classic Car Covers from Teignmouth, Devon. Not cheap, but it seems to have stood up well so far.

Presumably an outdoor cover, the ultimate is the Carcoon, but they are expensive. The problem with some outdoor covers is where the fabric touches the body of the car, the damp gets in and stays in, causing possible blistering of the paint, so get a cover that, hopefully, will not do that.

She did turn up last night I am well pleased I love it.
I would really appreciate it if someone who knows their way around a P5B could come round to have a look at my car and to give me some advice about it I am in Harrow ?
It needs a service what will be done soon as it is not running great, but has not been used much at all for a good few years so it is expected and no doubt a few things will need doing.
It is not to bad as it has just passed a MOT on the 10/11/2021
No doubt I need to learn all about the quirks about these old cars all part of the fun even if frustrating at times.
My first episode did not take long to happen it came of the recovery truck and it ran for about 5 to 10 minutes then stalled then would not start. My recovery plan said I never had a policy with them Flux rescue last night. But when I phoned them this morning to see what was happening they said I did. I had to get the AA round on another policy and we managed to get it on the drive last night. But to be fair when I told flux about this they did say they would pay any costs I had but there was none to pay so not to bad really in the end.
It would not start in park I thought it was the battery, but when the battery was tested it was showing enough power. So when put into neutral it would start. Then after moving it the battery then lost power.
But what a way to start, it will be all part of the memories and fun about the journey along the way so here we go happy days ahead.

For years I have had to ask for breakdown cover in my renewal- sometimes it was shown, other times it was shown separately - sometimes omitted. To be certain I phone every year to ask where it is on all the document attachments was so know I'm covered.
Recently I couldn't start from home so called the number provided to hear I wasn't covered. Another call to the insurers agreed but said they would help out for £75. On my insistence they listened to past phone calls to find that I had asked and they had confirmed. Hence a recovery truck arrived and the problem was fixed. Moral of this story is ask every renewal time and NOTE time and date of any phone calls you have made, even jotting it down on a hard copy of your documents.

I think I have a spare one in grey. Tiny split where the grill badge got in the way but a spare patch was provided so it can be fixed. Used once or twice. I will have to move my cars around to check but you are welcome to have it for the cost of carriage.

It does not seem that there is anything seriously wrong with your car Dean but a good service by someone who UNDERSTANDS P5s is clearly needed. Sadly an MOT is no guarantee of reliability and has never been.
It would help if you completed your profile fully?

Glad you now have a P5B.
A lot of what you will find, good & bad, will be down to previous owners work both skilled & bodged. The fewer previous owners the better IMO. The failure to start in PARK is a common problem and easily sorted. It's usually due to an out of adjustment linkage on the gear selector arm in that the selector arm on the gearbox side fails to move enough to activate the detents on the inhibitor switch and so allow the switch to activate and allow the car to start. Check wiring and if all that fails it could be the switch itself (but usually not)
Best advice is to always check the obvious first and these cars always respond to a calm rational approach to a problem although that's easier said than done sometimes!!

A calm, rational approach is indeed by far the best way forward. However, there is of course the occasional time when the red fog comes down and one is sorely tempted to pick up a 14lb sledgehammer and take a swing at the b....y thing! Usually after a spell of several nights working in the open in the depths of winter, lying on one's back with frozen fingers...you know the kind of thing. Of course, I would never dream of giving in to such temptation, but I have occasionally come close!

Might I suggest that if the car is going to live outside for a while you remove the spare wheel and store it somewhere dry as it will deteriorate over the winter. When in its tray the spare wheel should always be shiny side down, otherwise any moisture will sit on the chrome and lead to corrosion.

What difference does it make if I was to fill out my profile ? Would the P5 fairy's fix it for me one night

A little update I have had a bit of grief with the car as I suspected with the MOT several mistakes were made if you know what I mean. I have put it through another MOT and it failed long story short out of order not happy about that, especially as brakes and suspension was to do with the failing of the MOT. The garage that done the MOT has said that they will pay for the repairs for the bits that failed the MOT.
Does anyone know of anyone good garage nearer to me to do that kind of work I am in Harrow ?

I assume you mean Ely? They will be expensive. Surely there is an old time mechanic nearby? A factory workshop manual is essential however for any work on the car. The failure to start in Park or Neutral should be easy to sort as a temporary measure but it unsafe and dangerous and I will not outline the procedure

There is a good guy in a village not far from me who travels all over the place looking after classic cars of all makes, the owners just want to get in and drive! he charges £38 an hour plus traveling expenses, he has trouble keeping up with the demand.
