Well after two plus years of trying to track why my whole electrical system having a flicker and changing numerous parts from alternator to shunt resistor, cleaning connectors etc I eventually gave up and found an Auto electrician recommended by a club member. He spent3 hours testing cables using the wiring diagram that Phil kindly sent me to find that the permanent live from the solenoid upto the Lucas 6RA relay had some resistance which after bypassing this with a permanent temporary live resolved the problem.
I hope this may help someone else in the future. Thanks to all those that shared their advice.

Thanks for the update - old wiring and corroded connections are becoming all too common as newest P5s are almost 50 years old and some are well over 60!
