Eddie Jedrys seems to be the go to specialist for these period power steering systems in OZ.
From the significant number of framed, qualification certificates that hang on the rear wall of his modest workshop office, going right back to his early years as an apprentice motor mechanic (the top motor mechanic apprentice over 3 years), to time spent in the UK working on Ferraris, Eddie has acquired a depth of mechanical knowledge.
I visited Eddie today to pick up Mike's power steering components. Eddie had finished refurbishing both the PS box and the pump. During the rebuilding process, he fits a mixture original replacement seals along with other non standard seals that he has researched and modified the hydrosteer unit to accept. The hydrosteer casing is also modified/machined to accept these upgraded seals.
Similarly the pump is also modified by the addition of an external bypass valve/port that reduces the pump's pressure output by 10-15%. There is some slight additional plumbing to the return line. Eddie supplies the additional brass T and 90° pieces to complete the plumbed lines on the car.
* As an aside for the tech heads, according to Eddie, the existing factory designed pump bypass valve, recirculates the excess pressure internally. His modification dumps it directly into the return line. No changes are made to the original pump bypass valve or spring.
Here are a few pix and a schematic for the altered pump return line plumbing.
The Refurbished Hydrosteer unit.
The Modified Pump & Schematic.
The "added" Pressure Relief Valve.
The scope of Eddie's work Refurnishing & Modifying both Components
PS.
I'm looking forward to road testing Mike's saloon (for obvious reasons relating to it's recommissioning process....I'm sure Tony tightened those wheel nuts up properly? 😉) and of course, checking out the road feel and reduced power assistance delivered by the modified Hydrosteer pump and box. Should be interesting.
Will report back on our findings.
