On the gearbox casing just under the inhibitor switch is the flat surface of the input gear change shaft, mine has a hole from which fluid leaks all over my garage floor, looking at other cases that don't have this hole I decided to block it, but before I refit the engine I would just like to know what this hole is there for, any info would be gratefully recieved, regards Colin

I put a small self tapping screw in mine many years ago - that fixed it !
Fluid can also seep through the inhibitor switch, I covered mine in Araldite.

Cannot recall any hole - the inhibitor switch and gear change shaft seals are noted for leaking along with sump gasket. Are you sure it is not a blind hole? You do not mean the kickdown cable entry? Post a picture?

Just click on "Attachment" the green box at top right on a new or "edit open" post. The 3 attachments have a max size of 150KB each so will need to be heavily resized

IIRC that hole is for the pin that holds the selector shaft in place. If that's supposed to be a solid pin, and it's been replaced with a Mills (or roll) pin, then I can see that it might leak. I just can't remember offhand what type is supposed to be in there.

The hole contains a solid pin which locates the main selector shaft by passing through a slot made in the actual shaft. It is sealed at the gasket side of the case by the sump gasket itself, the top of the main case ( where you are having the leak ) should have a small dome shaped plug to stop any leaks. It is more than likely missing in your case, so just clean and seal it up. Worthwhile checking the fluid level as it sounds like it's a little on the high side, or it's left standing for a while.

That's interesting, I wonder if they left mine out when they rebuilt my gearbox, but that was 30 years ago ! Pity we did not have the Forum then
